The trains from Rome to Milan are fast, frequent and reliable. The fastest trains between Italy’s two largest cities use modern high-speed rail lines for the entire length of the journey.
Two companies compete on the stretch: NTV Italo and Trenitalia. Trenitalia have the edge when it comes to the number of trains. NTV Italo trains are less frequent, but have the advantage that tickets can often be booked as long as six months in advance.
During the first part of the journey there are lovely views of the Tiber and Arno Valleys on the run north out of the Italian capital. This changes beyond Florence where the stretch from Florence to Bologna is almost entirely in tunnels. From Bologna trains travel north-west across the North Italian Plain to reach Milan.
