Take the train from Rome to Perugia and you'll see the changing landscape as you head inland from the Italian capital, climbing slowly into the hills towards Assisi and Perugia.
If the timings of the direct trains from Rome to Perugia do not fit your schedule there are additional options, requiring a change of train at either Foligno or Terontola-Cortona.
Rome to Perugia

The direct trains to Perugia all leave from Rome Termini station in the heart of the Italian capital. They make a second stop nine minutes later at Rome Tiburtina station. The route then follows the Tiber and Nera Valley towards the hills. There is a great view of Assisi to the right about 20 minutes before arriving at Perugia. The station called Perugia Ponte SG is not the place to alight. Stay on the train for another ten minutes beyond Ponte SG until it arrives at Perugia itself.
