Frecciarossa
The journey from Milan to Trieste runs east across the North Italian Plain, passing through several of the region’s most notable cities: Verona, Vicenza and Padua among them. The final part of the run skirts the head of the Adriatic. Unfortunately, there are no great views of Venice, but there’s a wonderful stretch along the coast on the final approach into Trieste. Sit on the right side of the train for the best of those Adriatic views.
The direct trains from Milan to Trieste are Trenitalia Frecciarossa services. In addition to the direct trains, there are many additional connections each day via Venice Mestre. This option relies on a Frecciarossa train to Mestre and then an onward connection to Trieste on a slow regional train.
Milan Centrale to Trieste Centrale

All trains to Trieste depart from Milan Centrale station in the middle of the city. In Trieste, the station where they terminate is also called Centrale. From stazione centrale in Trieste, it is just a short walk south through the imposing new town (Borgo Teresiano) to Trieste's showpiece waterfront square, the impossibly grand Piazza Unità d'Italia. The fastest Frecciarossa train of the day, an evening departure from Milan, makes just five stops on the journey to Trieste. Most trains, however, make about eight stops and take over four hours. If you travel on one of the fast Frecciarossa trains on this route, you'll have - on most services - a choice of four different classes of seating, ranging from standard through premium and first to the ultra-posh executive class with its swish leather armchairs and complimentary refreshments. For most travellers, standard class suffices, but we do sometimes offer very good deals here on Loco2 on both premium and first class tickets on this route. It might be a chance to splash out and enjoy a little bit of extra comfort.
