Thello EuroCity
Taking the train from Milan to Marseille became even easier with the launch in late 2014 of a new direct Thello service linking the two cities. The direct train leaves Milan mid-afternoon, arriving into Marseille late evening. This train runs daily for much of the year, but just twice or thrice weekly in the winter period (late November to mid-March). If you wish to travel earlier in the day, there are plenty of alternative options. The best of these in terms of scenery and travel time require just one change of train in Nice.
The train heads south-west from Milan to reach the coast of Liguria at Genoa. From here the entire journey to Marseille broadly follows the Mediterranean coast. You’ll cross the Italian-French border between Ventimiglia and Menton. Not long after entering France, you’ll very briefly traverse the territory of the Principality of Monaco. For the best of the sea views, grab a seat on the left side of the train.
