Frecciarossa or Italo
The trains from Milan to Rome are fast, frequent and reliable.
Two companies compete on the stretch: NTV Italo and Trenitalia. Trenitalia have the edge when it comes to the number of trains and bookings open four months prior to travel. NTV Italo trains are less frequent, but have the advantage that tickets can often be booked as long as six months in advance.
The journey to Rome heads south-east across the North Italian Plain to Bologna, there turning south into the hills. The stretch from Bologna to Florence is almost entirely in tunnels, but beyond Florence there are fine views of the Arno and Tiber Valleys on the run south to the Italian capital.
