Overview
Founded in 2000, Trenitalia is the largest train operator in Italy offering high-speed, regional, overnight and international train routes. Frecciarossa is the high-speed train service operated by Trenitalia. When you see a “Frecciarossa” train buzzing through town with its iconic red colour and high speeds, you’ll immediately understand why this train’s name translates to “Red Arrow.”
Frecciarossa trains operate on dedicated high-speed rail lines and can reach speeds of up to 400 km/h, but max out at 300 km/h. They connect cities such as Milan, Rome, Florence, Venice, Naples and Bologna, providing passengers with a convenient and comfortable way to travel across the country. The Frecciarossa train schedule depends on the destinations, but with 120 daily departures, finding a train that aligns with your travel plans is a breeze.
The Frecce family
Frecciarossa is one of the three trains that fall under the “Frecce” umbrella Frecciargento and Frecciabianca are the other two high-speed options. Frecciarossa is the fastest of the three and connects many larger cities on high speed routes. Frecciargento, the silver arrow, and Frecciabianca, the white arrow, run at slightly lower speeds and reach large cities and smaller towns across Italy. Between the three of the Frecce brands, passengers can easily reach nearly all of Italy – from major cities to rural regions, and everything in between!
Where comfort meets style and sustainable travel
Frecciarossa delivers on efficiency, style and comfort aboard its elegant fleet. The entire Frecciarossa product catalogue sets a new standard for luxury travel, so much so that after the introduction of the Frecciarossa 1000 Executive Class was launched, many other European train operators started to try to compete by building out their own high-end classes of service. Here’s to Trenitalia and Frecciarossa improving travel all around Europe.
Frecciarossa’s flashy fleet
Frecciarossa 1000
The latest model, the Frecciarossa 1000, boasts exceptional environmentally friendly credentials and is the first high-speed train to be awarded the certificate of environmental impact (EPD). Even with 16 powerful engines, Frecciarossa 1000 trains are silent and sleek, with 8 coaches offering the highest levels of safety and comfort. When checking out with Rail Europe, review the Frecciarossa 1000 seat map to choose exactly where you want to sit.
Frecciarossa ETR 500
This Frecciarossa model is made of up 11 coaches with 574 seats. Like the Frecciarossa 1000, the Frecciarossa ETR 500 offers four classes of service, including Executive, Business, Premium and Standard. Still reaching high speeds and delivering on comfort, Frecciarossa 1000 offers newer, sleeker amenities.
Preparing for your journey
Types of individual Frecciarossa tickets
There are 3 types of Frecciarossa train tickets to choose from.
Base
These are the standard tickets offered for travel on Frecciarossa trains. This ticket has the most flexibility when it comes to changing travel details, like class of service and date of travel.
Economy
Similar to the Base ticket, the Economy ticket offers flexibility when it comes to changing travel details, like the date of travel, but with more limitations, making it the cheaper Frecciarossa train ticket option compared to the Base ticket.
Super Economy
The Super Economy Frecciarossa ticket is the cheapest option, but with that lower prices comes less flexibility. Choose this bargain fare if you don’t see a need for flexibility during your travels.
Frecciarossa Lounges
Executive Class and Business Salottino ticket holders can enjoy Trenitalia FrecciaClub Lounges in the following stations:
- Bari
- Bologna Centrale
- Florence SMN
- Milano Centrale
- Naples Centrale
- Padova Centrale
- Rome Termini
- Torino Porta Nuova
- Venezia S Lucia
These lounges are open Monday-Sunday, including holidays, with varying hours. Travellers will find free WiFi, decadent and health snacking and beverage options, dedicated working areas and, in certain lounges, like the FRECCIALounge at Roma Termini, a meeting room with an LCD screen you can connect your devices for meetings or checkins.
Before you board
There is no check-in prior to boarding Italian high-speed trains operated by Trenitalia. Ticket inspection takes place onboard. We recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early because train coach doors will close 1 minute prior to departure for all Trenitalia domestic long-haul trains (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca, IC, and ICNight). If you arrive after this time, you risk being denied access onboard.
Classes and services
Frecciarossa trains reflect Italian style and elegance in every way. With air conditioned, open-plan carriages boasting wide aisles, ergonomic seats and plenty of room for luggage, Frecciarossa trains were designed for comfort. So you can relax, whether your trip is a short or a long adventure.
- Free wifi and entertainment is available onboard Frecciarossa trains, and there are power sockets at every seat plus air conditioner for ultimate comfort.
- Onboard Frecciarossa 1000 trains, travellers can access Trenitalia's free FRECCE Portal, an entertainment platform offering a wide variety of films, TV shows, music, newspapers, weekly and monthly magazines.

Restaurant service onboard Frecce trains
FRECCIABistrò, a full-service restaurant, offers a wide selection of sweet (fresh croissants, yogurt and fruit salads, soft drinks, coffee wines and cocktails) and savoury foods (meals, salads, poke bowls, pizza). It is a stand-at-table affair with vegetarian and gluten-free options. Service is available to all passengers and is open the entire journey.
EasyBistrò is another service that allows passengers to purchase food and drinks at their seats (staff pass with a trolley) or to order it on the FRECCE Portal (on Frecciarosa) for at-seat dining on-demand. This includes everything from paninis to prosecco. See class details for more information.
Frecciarossa is dedicated to sustainable practices, not just in their transportation efforts, but also in all of their catering service offerings. They opt for packaging and products that are recycled or are made up of mostly raw materials. Frecciarossa staff now use bottles made of 100% recycled materials. Plus, once on board, you will see that all waste is separated into plastic, paper, glass, aluminum, organic and general waste to ensure that as much material as possible can enjoy a second life down the road…or track!
Classes of service
Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa trains provide four classes of outstanding service: Standard Class, Premium Class, First Class and Executive Class.
Frecciarossa Executive Class
Frecciarossa Executive Class caters for those who only reluctantly leave their private jet at home. Seriously! Trenitalia has set a new standard for elevated travel in Europe. With more space than any other provider, endless drinks and snacks and personalised service, riding aboard Frecciarossa’s Executive class is an experience that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.
Each carriage has eight large, reclining champagne-coloured leather armchairs equipped with a backrest and footrest, meeting the comfort needs of every single Executive Class passenger. These seats also rotate 180 degrees, so passengers can face their desired travel direction. Each seat has a tray table with extra space to store your belongings.
The fare includes a complimentary meal and hot or cold drinks served by the steward. Frecciarossa Executive Class travellers have a choice of three different menus offering a main dish, a snack, a dessert served on porcelain plates and steel cutlery. Passengers can choose from a generous menu of DOC and DOCG wines, craft beers and Italy’s top Illy coffee, served seatside from the espresso machine trolley. All food onboard Frecciarossa trains is made from fresh, Italian produce.
Frecciarossa 1000 trains also provide a meeting room in Executive Class where travellers can work alongside their travelling co-workers in peace and privacy. The meeting room is equipped with five seats and a large colour monitor that can be hooked up to a computer for presentations.
Executive Class travellers can access the FRECCIAClubs located at high-speed stations and then be greeted like royalty by staff on the platform before departure.
Frecciarossa Business Class
The Frecciaross first class is known as Business Class. As a Frecciarossa Business Class customer, you’ll be welcomed by train staff on the platform. Frosted partitions between each group of wide leather seats enhance your privacy. Reclining backrests ensure maximum comfort while travelling in Frecciarossa Business Class. Opt for the quiet zone (‘Silenzio’) for extra calm on your journey. Check out the Frecciarossa Business Class seat map at check out to select where you wish to sit during your journey.
Business customers will be met with a complimentary welcome drink, snack and newspaper. An onboard meal also comes with the fare. There are three menus to choose from as part of the Business Class catering service, offering a main dish, a snack, a dessert and a mini bottle of water served in a meal box. Trenitalia's Frecciarossa onboard catering is characterised by fresh, Italian ingredients. Diners will find gluten- and lactose-free options. Packaging, including boxes and water bottles, are made from recycled materials. Discretion and style are the hallmarks of this premium product which is aimed fair and square at the business market.
Frecciarossa Premium Class
Frecciarossa Premium Class delivers on comfort and savings. The legroom is the same as in Standard Class, but you have reclining leather seats in Premium Class on Frecciarossa trains. You are also served a complimentary hot or cold drink or a glass of Prosecco. Frecciarossa Premium Class is a sort of higher grade of Standard Class (modelled in some measure on many airlines’ Premium Economy Class). There is plenty of room for luggage under or above your seats. From Sunday to Friday, Trenitalia offers Frecciarossa Premium customers a welcome service, which includes a complimentary snack and soft drink, as well as a newspaper on morning services.
Note that this class of service is not currently available on the Milano-Paris line.
Frecciarossa Standard Class
Standard Class on Trenitalia’s Frecciarossa trains is a cut above normal Second Class accommodation with plenty of luggage space and a four-seat arrangement around a table. Peak-time services on the core stretch between Milan and Rome can be crowded. With the fastest trains taking less than 3 hrs, rail now beats air travel on this route.
On Frecciarossa trains, Frecciarossa Standard Class passengers can purchase food and drinks from Trenitalia's Easyfood service, which offers a wide selection of meals to enjoy at your seat. Opt for the Viva la Mamma Box from the menu for a fresh pasta main course. Easyfood orders can be booked online before boarding or bought once onboard.
Alternatively, Standard Class passengers can enjoy a bite to eat from the café-bar counter, FrecciaBistrò, where coffee, tea, sandwiches, salads, desserts and additional snacks are available.
Venice access fee
On selected dates between 3 April and 26 July 2026, visitors to Venice’s historic centre must pay an entry fee set by the Municipality of Venice.
