A lakeside view of St. Moritz, a Bernina Express destination

NEW IN 2023 : The panoramic Bernina Express train has arrived! Operated by Rhaetian Railway since its launch in 1920, the Bernina Express, snakes through the Bernina Alps of Switzerland and down into northern Italy . A narrow-gauge train, it is built to blend in with the surrounding landscape. Seeing the Swiss countryside up close is a truly an unforgettable experience. Get a glimpse of glaciers and Alpine mountain peaks as you travel through 55 tunnels and over 196 bridges. A marvel of engineering, the portion of the route running from Thusis to Tirano was even designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. The Bernina Express is a scenic train, which means that carriages are specially designed with extra-large panoramic windows to ensure that travellers can enjoy the view.

Journey details

Service starts in St Moritz (or Chur), Switzerland and goes all the way to Tirano, Italy. Trains operate daily year-round. (In the summer, a daily through-service is available from Davos and a bus connects Tirano, Italy to Lugano, Switzerland.) So, there are plenty of options to choose from.

Highlights include breath-taking vistas at the peak altitude of 2,253 meters at Ospizio Bernina station, sharp drops on the way to Poschiavo, and great photo opportunities at the Brusio spiral viaduct. As the train heads south, landscapes transform, and temperatures become milder. Discover the diverse landscapes of the northern and southern Alps in just a matter of hours!

The Rhaetian Railway also operates a regular local service on this route. Be advised that most local trains are not express, don’t have the same amenities, and are not fit with panoramic windows.

Classes of service

The scenic trains branded Bernina Express provide two classes of service: standard class and first class.

Bernina Express First Class

Upgrading to first class on the Bernina Express means more legroom, the comfort of a leather seat, and an escape from the crowds during the busy summer season. Seats face each other and have a table in between. Single seats facing each other (2 total) or pairs of seats facing each other (4 total) are available.

Bernina Express Second Class

In Bernina Express standard class, seating is arranged in pairs across a central aisle, with groups of four facing each other and sharing a table. This means that there are more passengers per carriage, but you’ll still have panoramic windows and amazing views.
