The new direct train from Madrid to Marseille has given a boost to business and leisure travel between the two cities. If the timings of the direct train do not suit your schedule there are further options which normally require a change of train at both Barcelona Sants and Narbonne, adding in total about an hour to the overall journey time.
The direct service to Marseille from Madrid is run by Spanish rail operator RENFE, using high-speed AVE trains. The first part of the journey is a fast dash from Madrid through Barcelona to Perpignan in France. Thereafter the pace slows as the train cruises through Languedoc to reach Marseille.
Madrid to Marseille-St-Charles

The journey from Madrid to Marseille starts at Puerta de Atocha station in the Spanish capital. The direct AVE service makes 11 intermediate stops. There is much good scenery on this route, with some particularly fine views of the Languedoc coast on the stretch between Perpignan and Montpellier. Arrival in Marseille is at St-Charles station, from where it is just a 10-minute walk through the Quartier Belsunce to the old port.
