It is very easy to travel by train from Marseille to Aix-en-Provence – two cities which reveal very different perspectives on Provence.
Although no more than a short hop, this journey is full of interest. The trains to Aix head north through Marseille’s suburbs, turning east at Septèmes and climbing slowly into the hills. On the approach to Aix, there are excellent views of the limestone buttresses of Montagne Sainte-Victoire to the right of the train.
Marseille-St-Charles to Aix-en-Provence Centre

The trains on the Marseille to Aix-en-Provence route are TER services. TER stands for transport express régional. These trains leave from Marseille-St-Charles and arrive in Aix at the city centre station (not the TGV station which is some distance outside the city). The fastest services take just 35 minutes, making just one intermediate stop on the journey from Marseille to Aix-en-Provence. Slower services make four to six stops, taking up to 20 minutes longer for the journey.
