It is very easy to travel by train from Marseille to Avignon. This is a journey which is full of interest. The direct trains head north through Marseille’s suburbs, skirting the city’s airport and then running around the northern edge of the saline lake known as the Étang de Berre. Many trains then travel via Arles, others via Salon-de-Provence, to reach Avignon.
If you are in a rush to reach Avignon, there is an alternative to this scenic but slow journey. Fast TGV trains speed from Marseille to the out-of-town TGV station near Avignon in just 30 minutes. This station is called Avignon TGV. From there, you can take a shuttle train to Avignon Centre.
Marseille to Avignon Centre

The trains on the Marseille to Avignon Centre route are TER services. TER stands for transport express régional. These trains leave from Marseille-St-Charles and arrive in Avignon at the city centre station called Avignon Centre (this is not the TGV station which is some distance outside the city). Avignon Centre station lies right by the ancient city walls.
The fastest services make just three intermediate stops on the journey from Marseille to Avignon. Slower services make a dozen or more stops.
