In November and December, the first Christmas markets start to sparkle in towns across Alsace and beyond.
Planning ahead means you can build your ideal trip now, whether it’s a long weekend, a one-way journey or a full holiday itinerary by train.
TGV inOui or Intercités? Here’s the difference
TGV inOui trains are France’s high-speed heroes. They connect cities like Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux and Avignon at speeds of up to 320km/h, with fast, comfortable journeys and frequent departures. These trains are ideal for longer distances and busy schedules, and they offer both Standard and First Class seats, with power sockets and wifi on most routes.

Intercités trains run on classic lines and take you off the high-speed network. They connect more regional destinations such as Limoges, Brive-la-Gaillarde, Albi and the Atlantic coast. While slightly slower, Intercités trains are still comfortable, with generous luggage space and great views of the French countryside. Some routes even offer overnight travel with couchettes and sleeper cabins, a charming way to cross France while you sleep. The dream!
What’s coming up from September to December 2025?
The end of the year is full of reasons to travel. Cultural events like the Biennale de Lyon, heritage open days across the country, and harvest season in France’s many wine regions make early autumn an inspiring time to explore.
Later in the year, look out for literary events marking the 150th anniversary of poet Paul Claudel’s birth, or simply hop on a train to soak up the festive lights, markets and cosy cafés of towns like Strasbourg, Colmar and Dijon.
