The term InterRegio refers to European trains which link regions within a country. Usually abbreviated as IR, they stand between a Regional Express and an Intercity when it comes to speed and service. As a rule of thumb, InterRegio services are more upmarket in Switzerland and more basic in Belgium, Hungary, Portugal and Poland.
In Poland , InterRegio trains are used on long-distance routes. They are, however, not as fast as Intercity services. In Germany there are a limited number of InterRegio Express (IRE) trains, which share routes with Regional Express services.
InterRegio trains often consist of older carriages – except in Switzerland, where high-quality trains are regularly deployed on InterRegio routes.

Before you board
There are no specific pre-boarding requirements for InterRegio trains.
Onboard
InterRegio trains are generally comfortable and have good luggage space. InterRegio trains are not generally air conditioned.On some Swiss InterRegio trains, a trolley service offers snacks and hot and cold drinks at your seat. Examples are the trains between Zurich and Lucerne and Lucerne and Geneva.
Booking and printing options
InterRegio tickets are open for bookings 30-90 days in advance, depending on the service you travel with.Prior seat reservation on InterRegio trains is usually not possible.
Classes of service
InterRegio trains usually offer two classes of service: Standard Class and First Class. Please note that in Poland and Hungary InterRegio trains provide Standard Class only.
InterRegio First Class
If two classes of seated accommodation are available, upgrading to First Class might make sense especially when travelling at a busy time or on weekends. You’ll get a little extra space.InterRegio Standard Class
Standard Class seating on InterRegio services can be in open-plan carriages or in six-seat compartments. Some trains, particularly in Switzerland or on InterRegio Express routes in Germany, have double-decker carriages. Luggage space is available at the end of each carriage or in racks above seats.Featured journeys
