Overview
The Champagne region, known for its champagne, gastronomy and art de vivre, is the place to be for a bubbling journey. So close from Paris, Champagne invites you to a unique experience in less than 45 min or less than 30 min from CDG Airport to Reims, thanks to the high speed TGV.
In Reims or Epernay which are at the heart of the Touristic Route of Champagne, stroll along the kilometres of cellars dug into the chalk and taste Champagne from famous brands. Discover the picturesque medieval alleys of Troyes and its factory shops.
Day 1
Reims
The train departing from Paris Gare de l’Est takes only 0h45 to reach Reims. Hop off the train and you will be at the Place Drouet d’Erlon, in the heart of the city. On this square and in the surrounding streets, the many Art déco buildings are the finest examples of this type of architecture in France. A few steps further, Notre-Dame Cathedral emerges from downtown roofs. Notre-Dame is one of the three Reims monuments listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe’s most important Gothic churches.
It hosted the coronation ceremony of most of French kings. Discover the royal treasury in the adjoining Palais du Tau, the former residence of the archbishops of Reims. Have a glass of champagne at the Café du Palais, which is listed as a Historic European Café.
Day 2
The famous Champagne brands invite you to visit their cellars where their magnificent vintages are fermented for many long years, before being part of celebrations all over the world. All in all some 120 kilometres of cellars are hidden in the subsoil of Reims.
If you choose Pommery’s ones, don’t miss the neighbouring Villa Demoiselle, a sublime Art déco mansion restored a few years ago in the spirit of the early 20th century. Then head for St. Remi Basilica, a Romanesque-Gothic church abbey church. The adjoining St. Remi Museum has an important collection dedicated to the local history. The whole abbey is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
