Overview
Intercités services are run by SNCF, the French national railway company, on medium and long-distance routes within France. These trains are considered “classic” services that now include most conventional (non-TGV) long-distance routes. Intercités trains are modern, air-conditioned and comfortable, providing a convenient way to travel beyond the high-speed network.
They are particularly well-suited for reaching towns and cities not directly connected by high-speed rail, giving travellers the chance to explore more regional destinations across France.

SNCF offers several types of train travel to suit different needs:
- TGV (Trains à Grande Vitesse): high-speed services connecting major French cities and neighbouring countries in record time.
- Intercités: conventional daytime trains linking medium and long-distance routes. They are slightly slower than TGVs but often cheaper and serve destinations not on the high-speed network.
- Intercités de Nuit: overnight services that let you travel while you sleep. Find out more in our guide to Intercités de Nuit.
Together, these services give you the flexibility to travel across France in the way that best fits your journey.
Benefits of Intercités trains
Travelling with Intercités offers unique advantages:
- Reach hidden gems: Intercités trains serve smaller cities and towns that are not always accessible by high-speed services.
- Affordable fares: tickets are generally cheaper than TGV, especially when booked in advance.
- A slower pace: journeys take a little longer, allowing more time to enjoy the scenery and the experience of travelling through France.
