Frecciarossa or Italo
This route follows mainly traditional rather than high-speed lines, but these legacy rail routes have been much improved over the last three years, bringing the journey time for the very fastest trains between the two cities down to just two hours. In 2016, Trenitalia introduced its posh Frecciarossa trains onto this important business route (ousting the older and less comfortable Frecciabianca trains). In 2018, private operator NTV Italo brings a whiff of competition to the Venice to Milan run, with several trains each day offering a similar travel time to Trenitalia. Italo's arrival on the route has led to some price competition, with some heavily discounted fares for travel in premium classes.
On the way, you'll pass through Padua, Vicenza, Verona and Brescia. The landscape on this route is generally pancake-flat, but there are some moments of quiet drama: the impressive start as you leave Venice Santa Lucia station and a glimpse of Lake Garda shortly after leaving Verona.
Venice to Milan Centrale
Trenitalia and NTV Italo both operate this route from Venice to Milan, in each case using their smartest high-speed trains (even though most of the railway from Venice to Milan is anything but high-speed!). There is also a once-daily EuroCity train (operated by Swiss Railways).
Most trains leave Venice from Venezia Santa Lucia, which is the more convenient station for the Old Town. If you book on a train that does not run from Santa Lucia, you can always join the train to Milan at Venice Mestre station. Most trains on this route stop five or six times en route to Milan before arriving at Milan Centrale station, from where you'll find a fine range of onward connections.
