Thello night train
The direct overnight train from Paris to Verona is a cheap and easy way to travel between the two cities. This is a perfectly timed overnight journey. It leaves sufficiently early that you have time to relax on the train before turning in for the night. And arrival in Verona is just before eight in the morning. The overnight service from Paris to Verona is run by Thello.
There is also a daytime option, requiring a change of trains in either Milan or Turin.
On the Thello night train from Paris to Verona, there is a choice of overnight accommodation options. Couchettes are rather like bunks. It's a cheap and cheerful favourite for budget travellers, with each compartment sleeping four to six people. It's ideal for families with young children, or for a group of friends travelling together. For extra comfort, though the price is a little higher, consider booking a proper sleeping compartment (called 'cabins' on the Thello train). Choose between standard cabins, each sleeping one to three people, or a premium cabin for just one or two travellers. These premium cabins include an en-suite toilet and a shower. There are only four premium cabins on each train. If you opt for the standard cabins, the en-suite plumbing is limited to a simple washbasin. Passengers booked in cabins are offered a welcome drink on boarding the train and a complimentary breakfast is served as the train runs through northern Italy in the morning.
Paris to Verona (night train)
The Thello overnight train to Verona departs from Paris Gare de Lyon station. In the early hours, the train runs along the shore of Lake Geneva with lovely views of the Alps on a clear night. There is a wonderful moment in the morning when the train skirts the edge of Lake Maggiore. The only intermediate stop in France is at Dijon, where the train picks up passengers. The overnight run across Switzerland is non-stop. In the morning the train stops at Milan and Brescia before reaching Verona.
In Verona, you'll alight from the night train from Paris at Verona's main railway station, which is called Verona Porto Nuova. This station is located well south of the city centre - roughly a 20 minute walk from the main sights, but there are also regular buses leaving for the central area from just outside the station. The night train from Paris continues beyond Verona to Venice.
TGV & Frecciabianca
It is easy to travel by train from Paris to Verona. There is a direct overnight train between the two cities operated by Thello. But many travellers enjoy making this journey entirely by day using the following route, which requires just a single change of train at Porta Susa station in Turin.
You have a choice of two trains each day for the outward journey from Paris to Verona. On the return there is just one train each day back from Verona via Turin, getting back into Paris in the late evening. If you don’t mind a very early start, there is an additional return option from Verona, by taking a local train from Verona to Porta Garibaldi station in Milan, changing there onto a breakfast-time direct TGV to Paris.
Your journey starts by boarding a high-speed TGV train from Paris to Turin. That train travels through Burgundy and the Alps. In Turin you join a direct Frecciabianca service to Verona.
Paris to Turin
Fast TGV trains speed south from the French capital, cutting through Burgundy to reach Lyon, their first stop. After that, the pace slows as the terrain becomes more mountainous. All trains on this route stop at Chambéry and Modane before entering Italy, where the train makes two stops at Bardoneccia and Oulx.
Upon arrival in Turin, the high-speed trains from Paris stop at Porta Susa station, an easy 10-minute walk west of the city centre. Porto Susa affords an excellent range of onward connections - including high-speed services to Florence and Rome, as well as direct trains to Verona and Venice. The TGV from Paris continues beyond Turin Porta Susa to Milan, dawdling rather than dashing on the final leg of its long journey from Paris.
Torino Porta Susa to Verona Porta Nuova
The rail route from Turin to Verona is part of the main west-east rail axis across northern Italy. Trenitalia run ten Frecciabianca services each day on this line. It’s not a high-speed route, but the trains are very comfortable and there’s a lot to see on this long traverse across the North Italian Plain. The journey takes just over three hours. The train makes five stops on the journey from Turin to Verona.
