TGV
The fastest high-speed TGV trains run at least hourly on Europe’s first-ever high-speed rail route. The line from Lyon to Paris (called the LGV Sud-Est) was opened in 1981.
The high-speed route is usually served by double-deck TGV Duplex trains, so book a seat on the upper deck for the best views. The journey from Lyon to Paris has a touch of drama. The route sweeps north, dashing through the vineyards of Burgundy before cutting through the hills to reach the chalklands of the Paris Basin.
If the idea of such speed doesn’t appeal, you can take the very scenic classic line from Lyon to Paris, using TER regional trains which leave from Part Dieu station in Lyon and take just over five hours to reach Paris Bercy.
Lyon to Paris
Every day, direct TGVs – usually double-deck TGV Duplex trains – leave Lyon for Paris. Within little more than an hour you swap the soft contours of Burgundy vineyards for the suburbs of Paris. All TGV services from Paris serve Lyon Part Dieu station. Most also stop at Lyon-Perrache which is more convenient for the heart of the old city. Arrival in Paris is at the Gare de Lyon.
