Getting the most out of your trip to Paris
Known for its endless world-class museums, iconic monuments, delicious restaurants and unparalleled shopping opportunities, the only negative part of visiting Paris is that you can't do it all! But no matter how much or how little you can squeeze into your trip, we're certain you will walk away enchanted.
Foremost, of course, is the Eiffel Tower, offering fantastic views of the city from its observation decks. But, remember that when you are on the Eiffel Tower, you cannot see the tower itself! We recommend getting a 'golden hour' snap from one of the many rooftop restaurants in town. If you want to get some shopping at the same time, take in the view from the cafeteria at Galeries Lafayette or Printemps, both located blocks from the breathtaking Opera Garnier, which is another can't-skip stop. Aren't visiting Paris during Opera season? Book a tour of the opulant opera that inspired the "Phantom of the Opera." Be sure get your ticket in advance to avoid lines.
Other iconic activities include admiring masterpieces like the Venus de Milo and the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, strolling down the Champs-Élysées to marvel at luxury bags on your way to the majestic Arc de Triomphe, and visiting the Notre Dame Cathedral, which dates all the way back to the 12th century.
While Paris is a very walkable city, if you have a tight schedule or a reservation to catch, hop on the Paris Métro. Trains run frequently and connect you to virtually every major attraction and neighbourhood. Complementing the metro are the buses, trams and the RER (the commuter train). While Paris is a relatively safe city, it is important to be aware of your surroundings and possesions, especially when taking the Métro, which is known for having issues with pickpocketing. Be sure to also always purchase and validate your ticket when riding the Métro as agents often walk up and down the halls of the stations and trains to check tickets. If you haven't validated yours (or can't find it), you will be charged a fine on the spot. And the excuse of not having cash won't cut it. These Métro officers accept credit cards! (We can't say the same for Paris' famous street markets.)
Shopping and dining recommendations in Paris
Undoubtedly, Paris is a match made in heaven for food lovers and fashion enthusiasts. All major luxury brands have multiple locations in Paris. Note that some require a reservation or queueing to visit. If you'd prefer to peruse a number of brands under one roof, shop til you drop at Galeries Lafayette, Printemps, Le Bon Marché and BHV, some of the most popular department stores in town. To shop more sustainably, head to the top floor of Galeries Lafayette Haussmann and Printemps Haussmann and find gently used pieces from some of the most sought-after brands. Outside of these department stores, there are seeminly endless second-hand and vinatage shops around the city. Le Marais and République are two of the trendiest district, where you can find everything from one-of-a-kind vintage pieces to "haute"-off-the-runway look from chic boutiques and trendy cafés.
Head to Montmartre for an array of art galleries, quirky shops and traditional French eateries. Be sure to savour local delicacies such as fresh baguettes from a local bakery or a decadent crème brûlée at a charming café. The Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighbourhood is another can't-miss, best known for the iconic dining experiences to be had at Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore, galleries and independent bookstores.
Unique experiences and tours in Paris
If you want to go beyond the touristic essentials, Paris has countless unique experiences hidden in plain sight. History enthusiasts will enjoy guided tours of classic neighbourhoods. Whether it’s the medieval streets of the Latin Quarter, the classic Haussmannian architecture or walking through the Jewish Quarter in Le Marais, each tour serves up interesting facts as told by experienced guides. These local guides are a wealth of knowledge, so ask all the questions you have and even consider getting some food and drink recommendations.
Culinary enthusiasts won't want to miss out on food classes focused on mastering the art of French cooking. Consider taking a hands-on class that teaches how to bake fresh croissants or whip up a classic Boeuf Bourguignon or even to create intricate pastries such as macarons. If cocktails are more your speed, book a speakeasy tour to discover the hidden bars in Paris from the point of view of a local.
Why just walk the Seine when you can ride it? Book a private or group boat to cruise up and down the Seine, seeing all of the top sites, including Notre Dame, Pont Neuf and the Eiffel Tower. Experience a truly unforgettable moment and select an excursion that wraps up a half an hour after the sun goes down. This will allow you to not only see all of the major landmarks before sunset, but it also aligns perfectly with the lighting up of the Eiffel Tower. The tower's 20,000 lights make for a fitting grand finale to your trip to the "City of Light."
