Eurostar & TGV
It is very easy to travel by train from London to Aix-en-Provence. The journey normally has two parts: a ride on Eurostar from London to France, and then an onward connection on a high-speed TGV train within France.
The key question is where to make that change from Eurostar to TGV. On those days when there is a direct Eurostar from London to Avignon, it makes sense to change there – but that does mean an early morning start from London. The direct train from London (and Ashford) to Avignon is a seasonal service; in 2018, it starts on 4 May and runs three or four times weekly until the autumn. An alternative is to travel from London via Lille with a choice of trains each day from Lille to Aix. Finally, if you do not mind changing stations in Paris, you have an excellent choice of services via the French capital.
Of these various routes, the most consistently popular with Loco2 customers is that via Lille, which we describe here. It starts with a short ride on Eurostar from London to Lille, where you change onto a TGV for the fast run south to Aix-en-Provence.
London to Lille

Board a Eurostar service from London to Lille. There are about ten trains from London to Lille each day, departing every hour or two from the beautifully restored station at St Pancras. At Lille, Eurostar stops at the modern Lille Europe station, which has an excellent range of onward high-speed trains to cities across France.
The fastest Eurostar trains from London speed to Lille in just 1 hr 22 mins. Slower trains (which may make up to three stops along the way) take up to 20 minutes longer to reach Lille Europe.
Remember to factor in at least half an hour for Eurostar’s airline-style baggage check prior to boarding your train. This is a light-touch security scan, and there are no restrictions on taking liquids on board Eurostar trains.
Lille Europe to Aix-en-Provence TGV

Six high-speed TGV trains each day run directly from Lille Europe to Aix-en-Provence TGV station. The latter is not the city centre station in Aix, but a dedicated new station for high-speed trains south-west of the city. There is a regular bus link from the station into town.
Trains from Lille to Aix-en-Provence make four or five intermediate stops. The route tracks south from Flanders through Picardie, before skirting the eastern suburbs of Paris. Then it’s south through Burgundy to the Rhône Valley where all trains stop in Lyon and then at either Valence or Avignon before arriving in Aix.
