TER or TGV Lyria
It is an easy journey by train from Geneva to Lyon. There are direct trains each day on this route. These are in the main TER regional trains, but an occasional TGV Lyria service also links the two cities.
On the face of it, this is a journey that follows the Rhône Valley all the way from Geneva to Lyon. But the railway plays cat and mouse with the river, on some occasions leaving the main valley and cutting through the hilly terrain of the Jura region. The highlight is the rugged gorge-like Cluse des Hôpitaux. All in all this is a short trip worth making just for its varied scenery.
Geneva to Lyon

Trains on the route from Geneva to Lyon depart from the Gare de Cornavin. They make up to six intermediate stops on their journey to Lyon. All trains stop at Bellegarde about 25 minutes after leaving Geneva. This is the frontier station where once Swiss and French officials conducted border formalities. Nowadays both countries have signed up to the Schengen Agreement, so passport checks are extremely rare.
Upon arrival in Lyon all trains stop at Part-Dieu station. Some, but not all, of the TER services then continue to Lyon-Perrache which is much more convenient for the heart of the old city.
