The pass has been helping travellers see Europe by train for decades, and until September 2026 it came in two versions: Eurail for travellers living outside Europe, and Interrail for those living in it. There is now one pass and one name. Covering 33 countries and including exclusive offers for passholders, it is a must for anyone looking to see more destinations with less stress.

Who can buy an Interrail Global Pass?

The Interrail Global Pass is now sold to travellers wherever they live. You no longer need to work out which version of the pass applies to you, and there is no longer a separate product for travellers based outside Europe.

There is one thing to know if you live in Europe. The Global Pass is built for travelling beyond the country you live in rather than around it. In many countries of residence, journeys that start and end inside your home country are not covered, with one exception: you can use the pass for one journey out of your home country and one journey back into it, and those journeys use travel days like any other journey.

Everything you do outside your home country is covered as normal, with no limits at all.

If you are not sure whether this applies where you live, you do not need to work it out. Tell us your country of residence when you search and we will show you the passes available to you, and tell you at checkout if a pass is not available.

What that looks like in practice

Say you live outside Europe. Nothing above applies to you. Fly into Lisbon and the pass covers all of it: Lisbon to Madrid, Madrid to Barcelona, Barcelona to Paris, and every day trip in between.

Say you live in Europe and you are planning three weeks across France, Spain and Portugal. Your pass covers the train out of your home country, everything you do across those three countries, and the train home at the end. What it will not cover is a few days of travel inside your own country before you set off.

And if the trip you are planning is entirely inside the country you live in, the Global Pass is not the right product, and a One Country Pass for your own country is not sold to residents either. In that case you are looking for a domestic ticket or a national railcard rather than an Interrail Pass.

Pass options

Once you've completed your purchase you can access your digital pass directly from your smartphone.

Pass activation

Your pass can be activated on the first day of your travels. This starts your travel days, whether you have continuous unlimited travel or a set number of flexible days. You have up to 11 months from buying your pass to activate it, and once a pass is activated it cannot be refunded, so activate it when you're ready to travel.

Using your pass

Currently the Interrail Global Pass offers the following options:

• Continuous Pass: unlimited travel for 15 days, 22 days, one month, two months or three months.

• Flexible Pass: four, five or seven travel days within one month, or 10 or 15 travel days within two months.

To use your pass, either board the train or make a reservation in advance where one is required.

Thanks to Rail Europe, the Interrail Pass is remarkably simple and you’ll only need to follow a few quick steps to complete your booking and set off on your next adventure.

Step 1: Choose your country or region

First, open the "Passes" section of the Rail Europe booking widget. For the Interrail Global Pass, set your country as "Europe."

You'll also see "Valid From" dates. That doesn't mean you have to travel on that date. You can activate your pass any time within 11 months of buying it, which means you don't need a trip planned to get your pass. The pass can be the reason you book the trip.

Step 2: Set your travel days

Finally, you can set your own travel days. Each travel day allows unlimited train journeys within a 24-hour period, allowing you to get the most out of every moment of your trip.

Step 3: Choose your class

The Interrail Pass offers First Class and Second Class for both Continuous and Flexible Passes, so you can find the option that suits your budget.

Step 4: Personalise your details

You'll be asked for basic details for every traveller using an Interrail Pass, which takes a few minutes. This includes your country of residence, which is what we use to show you the passes available to you.

Step 5: Book your seats if needed

Depending on the operator or the type of train you might need to reserve a seat in advance. Reservations are not included in your pass, so check ahead.

Use Rail Europe to reserve seats on SNCF (both domestic and international trains), Eurostar and Trenitalia trains. Follow these instructions for getting your seat on board. To reserve your seat with other train providers, you can do so using the Interrail Rail Planner App.

Pro-tip: Travel during non-peak seasons

If you want to spend more time exploring and less time in a crowded train station, book your travel days during non-peak seasons to find better seat options and more flexible train schedules. We also love scenic routes that are often less utilised by daily travellers and provide breathtaking views of the entire region.

Take advantage of an Interrail One Country Pass

So what if you want the savings of an Interrail Pass but only have one country on your list?

That's where the Interrail One Country Pass comes in.

Like the Global Pass, a One Country Pass lets you hop on and off as many trains as you like on your travel days, but it covers a single country. It suits visitors who want to see as much as possible of one place without juggling separate tickets.

One Country Passes are not sold to residents of the country the pass covers, so if you live in Italy you cannot buy a One Country Pass Italy. The passes for Switzerland and Great Britain are sold to European residents only, and travellers based outside Europe should look at the Swiss Travel Pass or BritRail instead. We'll tell you at checkout if a pass is not available where you live.
