Airports have this one sorted but car companies have been slower to tap into the rail travellers’ network. Here are some of our top places to visit by train in the UK where your next carriage awaits. Car hire at Bournemouth train station, Dorset
Explore Dorset’s UNESCO Jurassic Coast by picking up a Europcar rental in Bournemouth station, the largest seaside resort of the region. Go coasteering in Lulworth Cove, surf at Kimmeridge Bay, visit Chesil Beach, take a walk through Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty or seek out one of many historic cream tea-filled villages.
Car hire at Chester train station, Cheshire
There is an Avis car rental office just 3 mins walk from Chester station. You will definitely not want to head out of this fine, Roman city straight away though but when you do, you have the north coast of Wales to explore going west, or the Peak District National Park heading east in just under 2 hrs drive.
Car hire at Edinburgh train station, Scotland
There are several leading car rental companies right beside Edinburgh’s Waverley station, including Sixt and Europcar. So you have no shortage of options to help you explore the Highlands and Islands, national parks and all the country’s nooks and crannies.
Car hire at Fort William train station, Scotland
Located on Loch Linnhe, part of the Great Glen Way, and at the foot of Ben Nevis, Fort William is the hub for hikers, bikers and nature seekers. It is also the terminus of the historic Caledonian Sleeper Train. Fort William Car Hire will meet you off the train to bring you to their office just 1.5km from the town centre.
Car hire at Holyhead train station, Wales
Holyhead may be the end of the line for some people who are taking the ferry over to Ireland, but with a Hertz office in the station, this is also a great spot from which to explore the Wales Coast Path, enabling you to dip in and out of this long-distance walking trail at your leisure.
Car hire at Newcastle upon Tyne train station, England
Europcar, Alamo and Enterprise car rental companies all operate out of Newcastle station. You have many choices to enjoy this region, such as the most underrated of all our national parks, Northumberland National Park, as well as Hadrian’s Wall.
Car hire at Penzance train station, Cornwall
Europcar operates out of Penzance train station, so take a train as far as you can on Cornwall’s southern tip and go explore every cove, cliff walk and Cornish delight along the Penwith Heritage Coast. Land’s End doesn’t have to mean the end of your journey.
Car hire at Salisbury train station, Wiltshire
Churchfields Industrial Estate, just 10 mins walk from Salisbury station has several car rental companies including Hertz and Enterprise. After exploring this historic city’s cathedral or nearby Stonehenge, you have a wealth of protected Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty within a quick easy drive. These include the North Wessex Downs, Cranborne Chase and the New Forest National Park.
