Riding the trains in eastern Europe is quite the adventure, and Hungary – being one of the major hubs of travel in this part of Europe – is a great place to start.
Both domestic and international Hungarian trains are operated by MÁV, the national railway company in Hungary. There are a few different types of trains to choose from :
Passenger trains, also known as Szemelyvonat, are basic commuter trains with only second class seats available. These trains are open seating and general run along shorter routes.
Express trains, also known as Gyors, are local trains covering longer distances than passenger trains, and they also do not require seat reservations.
InterCity trains are the fastest trains operating in Hungary. A seat reservation is required for all travelers, and both first and second class are available.
EuroCity/EuroNight trains are international trains requiring seat reservations, and they travel to most countries bordering Hungary.
E-ticketing is not available, so travelers will be issued a paper ticket that they will show to the conductor onboard the train. Hungarian trains are available for booking up to 60 days in advance.
