Hungary Interrail Pass

Eurail is now Interrail

Eurail and Interrail were two versions of the same pass, and which one you could buy depended on where you lived. That split has gone. There is now one name, Interrail, and it is available wherever you live. Your pass, bookings and account stay the same.

Overview

The Interrail Hungary Pass is the most comprehensive way to explore Hungary by train. Visit cities like Budapest, Debrecen and Pécs, and plenty more besides.

The Interrail Hungary Pass allows you unlimited travel on the days you choose, with the freedom to hit the tracks whenever and wherever you want. You can take as many trains as you like and there is no limit on the distance you can travel within a travel day. All of this at a fixed price.

Almost every main line in Hungary runs out of Budapest, which makes the capital an easy base. Head east to Debrecen, south to Pécs and Szeged, west to Győr and Sopron, or north to Eger and the wine country. Lake Balaton is a couple of hours away and busy all summer, and the Danube Bend at Esztergom and Nagymaros-Visegrád is close enough for an afternoon.

Hop on and off trains as you go. Just show up at the nearest station and get ready to explore somewhere new.

One thing to know before you travel. A seat reservation is compulsory on domestic InterCity services, including the domestic legs of Railjet trains. They are inexpensive and easy to get at any staffed station, or online through MÁV before you go. Many long-distance trains also carry unreserved Gyorsvonat coaches alongside the InterCity ones, and you can board those with your pass alone.

Your pass covers MÁV-START and GYSEV trains across the country. It is not valid on Budapest's HÉV suburban lines, so if you are heading out to Szentendre you will need a separate ticket for that leg.

Your pass is a mobile pass, added to the Rail Planner app, so there is nothing to print or collect.

Whether you are the adventurous traveller or the avid planner, the Interrail Hungary Pass is your pass to freedom and the key to an unforgettable trip.

Rail passes can be booked for travel in one specific country or you can choose one of a few pre-selected country/region combinations. Extensive travel plans? Try the Interrail Global Pass, offering train travel in 33 different countries. Once you've selected your pass, its price will depend on the class of service selected, passenger type, and the number of rail travel days.

Taking local and regional trains allows you to explore at will. Simply board with your Interrail Hungary Pass and choose any open seat. A seat reservation is compulsory on domestic InterCity trains, including the domestic legs of Railjet services, and you can book one at any staffed station or through MÁV before you travel. Where a train has both InterCity and Gyorsvonat coaches, the Gyorsvonat coaches are unreserved and your pass is all you need. We recommend always checking your journey for any specific seat reservation requirements.

Your paper-free rail pass needs to be activated in the Rail Planner app before your first train journey or first use of a pass benefit. You have up to 11 months from buying your pass to activate it, and once a pass is activated it cannot be refunded. Don't forget to download the app before you travel, in case you do not have good internet access when you arrive.

FAQs

Eurail and Interrail were two versions of the same pass, and which one you could buy depended on where you lived. That split has gone. Since 10 September 2026 there is one name, Interrail, so the Eurail Hungary Pass is now the Interrail Hungary Pass. The pass works like it did before, and you can buy it wherever you live outside Hungary. One Country Passes are not sold to residents of the country the pass covers, and we will tell you at checkout if a pass is not available where you live.

If you bought a Eurail Hungary Pass before 10 September 2026, it stays valid for its full period and nothing you have booked needs changing.

Child and youth passengers

The definition of "Child" and "Youth" varies by country and operator. This is why we ask for the age of young passengers.

Sometimes children below a certain age can travel without a seat for free. If you want to guarantee a seat for child passengers, enter '6' as the age of the child.
