The high-speed train from Avignon to Barcelona has transformed travel between the Rhône Valley and Catalonia. Comfortable AVE trains run by Spanish operator RENFE now dash between the two cities.
If the timing of the direct train does not suit, there are other connections between Avignon and Barcelona. These usually require travelling from Avignon Centre station on a local train to Montpellier or Narbonne, there to connect onto fast AVE or TGV. But travel times are up to five hours longer than on the direct train.
The rail journey from Avignon to Barcelona starts with good views of the lower part of the Rhône Valley. After a glimpse of cities such as Nîmes and Montpellier, the route skirts the Languedoc coast before using the new Perthus Tunnel to reach Spain.

The direct AVE train from Avignon to Barcelona departs from the TGV station in Avignon. Local trains run between Avignon Centre (in the heart of the city) and the much newer TGV station on the outskirts, taking 6 mins for the journey. The AVE train stops six times between Avignon and Barcelona. With lots of fine scenery along the way, the journey is a chance to just sit back and relax. Arrival in Barcelona is at Sants station, a short distance west of the city centre.
