Experienced Front-End Developer

Role description

To help us build and maintain an amazing B2C Travel Tech product (www.raileurope.com), using technologies like Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, Redux and Modular CSS, we’re searching for an experienced web developer. We're happy to consider anyone with demonstrable Rails, JavaScript and React experience and a desire to learn and grow. This is a fully remote role.

About you

Our ideal candidate meets many - but not necessarily all - of the below criteria.

  • 5+ years of professional web development experience
  • Deep knowledge of and experience in JavaScript/ES2015+, React, HTML and CSS/SCSS
  • Knowledge of and experience in JavaScript build and bundling tools such as Webpack
  • Experience in working with single-page applications and the React ecosystem
  • Knowledge of Ruby on Rails
  • Demonstrated experience with remote work, self-motivation, and asynchronous communication
  • You’re excited about the future of the web platform, the JavaScript ecosystem and are motivated to help Rail Europe adopt modern front-end technologies and always improve our website
  • You take pride in your craft and adhere to industry best practices for testing, code linting, peer review, and clean modular maintainable code
  • You strive to discover and understand the root cause of problems, suggesting new and improved solutions, rather than treating the symptoms
  • Fluent in English, even if it’s not your first language. Our current team comes from more 7 different countries and we’re excited to add more!
  • You’re confident communicating and sharing complex information and learnings with both technical and non-technical team members
  • You have a good understanding of Agile working
  • You can work hours that have some overlap with Paris daytime
  • Would be happy to be a contractor with a daily rate within the range of £275 and £300 (or equivalent in another currency)

About us

Rail Europe is an online booking service for train travel throughout Europe. Our mission is to make booking trains anywhere in Europe as easy and affordable as possible, from epic international adventures to everyday local commutes. We’ve been selling tickets since 2012.

Our tech team has a remote-first culture, which means we choose the best person for the job, regardless of geography. Our work is built on trust, empathy, and shared knowledge, with both customers and colleagues at the center of what we do.

Whilst we don’t expect you to be a master of the following technologies, our current software stack consists of:

  • a Ruby on Rails/CoffeeScript/SCSS website
  • a React-based single page application for our mobile site and hybrid mobile apps
  • a hybrid iOS app written in Swift
  • a hybrid Android app written in Kotlin
  • a Ruby on Rails/Ruby back-end + PostgreSQL and Redis storage
  • a Ruby library for communicating with train booking APIs
  • AWS hosted Docker infrastructure with continuous delivery

Join our team!

  • We have high coding standards and follow best practices such as continuous testing and delivery.
  • We strive to learn and improve together in a supportive environment as the wider tech ecosystem evolves.
  • Our days are not full of meetings and distractions. Allowing others to achieve flow is a big part of supporting each other.
  • Everyone is encouraged to ask questions, think creatively and suggest new working practices. We have a small team so your voice will be heard.
  • Our team enjoys a healthy work-life balance and don’t think caffeine-fuelled all-nighters are a good way to grow a company that’s built to last.
  • We are a team of fully remote workers
  • Our days are not full of meetings and distractions. Allowing others to achieve flow is a big part of supporting each other.
  • Once a month, we have our hack day, a day to improve our skills, work on side projects that could benefit our product or our team, experiment different technologies

We believe that diversity of background and experience contributes to a broader collective perspective that will consistently lead to a better company and better products. We are working hard to increase the diversity of our team wherever we can and we actively encourage everyone to consider becoming a part of it.

How to apply

Email [email protected] and tell us about your skills and experience, including links to any relevant public repositories, and your CV. We particularly like reading a well-written email.

There are some specific questions we'd like you to answer:

  • What are some of the most challenging/interesting programming tasks you have worked on?
  • Why do you want to work for Rail Europe?
  • In what country and timezone do you live?
  • What are your approximate daily rate expectations? (please state currency)

We welcome applications from everybody, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation.

Early in the recruiting process we may ask you to complete a challenge, which is judged anonymously. We anonymise responses in order to mitigate our own unconscious bias, and to ensure we reward those who demonstrate the development skills we require.
