The capital of French Flanders, Lille is a distinctive city that has, over recent years, transformed from industrial to cultural hub. Lille’s old town boasts an array of 16th and 17th century French and Flemish architecture while its hearty Hauts-de-France gastronomy of seafood and locally brewed beers keep you energised to explore its many museums, including the beautiful Palais des Beaux Arts. Art fans should also head to La Piscine in Roubaix, one of France’s most eminent collections of 19th and 20th century paintings, textiles and sculptures, all housed in a former Art Deco swimming pool. Travel from Lille to Roubaix by train in just 9 mins.

This year, Lille has been named 2020 World Design Capital, the first French city to be awarded this honour, with design and creative agencies opening their doors to the public and a glittering calendar of exhibitions and festivities taking place throughout the year. Of particular note, Lille’s Centre of Architecture and Urbanism is celebrating Bauhaus’ 100th anniversary with a special photography exhibition until 23 March.
