The train from Zurich to Como follows the main north-south route through the Alps, cutting under the highest mountains in the 15-kilometre-long Gotthard Tunnel. In mid-2016 an even longer tunnel opened taking 40 minutes off the journey time from Zurich to Como.
The best scenery on the journey is on the long climb up to the north entrance of the Gotthard Tunnel. Once out of the tunnel, the line drops down through the Ticino area of Switzerland, skirting Lake Lugano to reach the Italian frontier at Chiasso. Como is the first stop in Italy, just 5 minutes south of Chiasso.
Zurich HB to Como San Giovanni

There are direct EuroCity trains each day from Zurich to Como, leaving from the Hauptbahnhof in Zurich (shown as Zurich HB in Loco2's booking system). The principal stations along the route are Bellinzona and Lugano, both on the south side of the Gotthard Tunnel. Arrival is at Como S Giovanni station.
