TGV
The route followed by the TGVs cuts south-east from Paris, skirting Burgundy and crossing the River Rhône east of Lyon. Just before Marseille, the TGVs to the Riviera leave the high-speed line and follow a traditional rail route east along the Mediterranean coast to Nice.
Apart from the high-speed daytime services, there is also an overnight train from Paris to Nice. It’s called the Train Bleu, and you can take that to Nice for the onward hop to Monaco.
Paris to Monaco-Monte-Carlo
The daily direct high-speed TGV from Paris to Monaco Monte Carlo departs from the Gare de Lyon in the afternoon. The train is usually a TGV Duplex, so book a seat on the upper deck for the best views.
The train dashes south from Paris to reach its first stop at Aix-en-Provence in just under three hours. Thereafter the pace is more leisurely and the scenery becomes ever more captivating as the train tracks east towards Nice and beyond. Between Aix and Monaco, the train makes five more stops. Newcomers to Monaco are often surprised to find that the train arrives at a subterranean station. It’s not quite the sunshine welcome that many travellers expect.
