Planning to explore Switzerland with kids? The Swiss Family Card makes it easy - and free. Children aged 6 to 15 travel at no cost when accompanied by at least one parent holding a valid Swiss Travel Pass or Swiss Half Fare Card.

There’s no need to purchase a separate child ticket. Simply select a parent and child in your booking on Rail Europe, and choose a pass option that includes “with Swiss Family Card” in the name. That’s it — no stress, no extra fees, just more freedom for your family adventure.

Key benefits of the Swiss Family Card

  • Free travel for children: Kids aged 6 to 15 ride trains, buses, boats and more for free when travelling with a parent.

  • Easy to add: Just select both an adult and child in the Passengers section when booking on Rail Europe.

  • All-day, all-network access: Children travel on the same routes and transport services as their parent’s pass — including panoramic trains and mountain excursions.

  • No hidden costs: The Swiss Family Card is completely free just choose a pass that includes it.

  • Flexible for families: There’s no limit on how many children can travel with one adult.

  • Valid with top Swiss passes: Available when booking the Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Travel Pass Flex, or Swiss Half Fare Card.

Nationwide transport access for children

Children with a Swiss Family Card can travel for free across the Swiss public transport network which includes trains, buses, trams, boats and PostBuses, wherever their parent’s pass is valid.

Mountain transport & scenic trains

Children benefit from the same access and discounts as the parent’s pass. That means free or reduced fares on mountain railways like Rigi or Pilatus, and panoramic routes such as the Glacier Express or GoldenPass Line (seat reservations may apply).

Multiple pass compatibility

You can add a Swiss Family Card when booking any of the following:

Simple to use

Swiss Family Card vs. paying for child fares

  • Swiss Family Card: Kids 6–15 travel free with a parent holding a valid pass.

  • Child tickets: Without the Family Card, children usually pay 50% of the adult fare which adds up quickly.

Swiss Family Card vs. Junior Card (local-only)

  • Swiss Family Card: Free for tourists booking through Rail Europe; valid with major Swiss passes.

  • Junior Card: Sold only in Switzerland; not available when booking international passes online.

Child and youth passengers

The definition of "Child" and "Youth" varies by country and operator. This is why we ask for the age of young passengers.

Sometimes children below a certain age can travel without a seat for free. If you want to guarantee a seat for child passengers, enter '6' as the age of the child.
