Local tram
The best way reach San Sebastián from Hendaye is not by train, but by tram. This is a rare instance where the train is not the wisest choice. Travelling through south-west France by train, several routes converge on Hendaye, the very last railway station in France before the Spanish border. The tracks lead on over the bridge to Irun in Spain, but too few trains actually head on over into Spain.
Your best bet for crossing the border is to take the Metro Donostialdea tram. It runs every 30 mins from the station forecourt, taking just a couple of minutes for the hop over to Spain. The tram continues from Irun to San Sebastián taking 37 mins for the full journey from Hendaye. You can't book these tickets online. You can simply arrive at the station and buy your ticket then.
Hendaye to San Sebastián/Donostia
Leave the station building at Hendaye, turn to the right and follow the blue ‘Euskotren / Metro Donostialdea’ signs to the tram stop. The tram is Route L10, usually signed as running to Lasarte Oria as its final destination. Basque language is the norm here, so you need to know the vital fact that San Sebastián is known as Donostia in Basque. Buy your ticket at the tram stop before travelling.
