The direct trains to Frankfurt-am-Main all leave from Amsterdam Centraal station. Most of the trains on this route are ICE services operated jointly by the Dutch and German rail administrations. In addition to the ICEs, you’ll also find a German Intercity train plying the route. Whether you take an ICE or the slower Intercity service, you’ll have a choice of two stations to alight in Frankfurt. The train stops first at the airport (where the station is called Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof) and then continues into the city centre to the Hauptbahnhof.
The ICE trains from Amsterdam to Frankfurt make just six stops along the way. Beyond Cologne they use a high-speed line which cuts through the hills. The Intercity service makes more stops and takes over two hours longer. Beyond Cologne it follows the old Rhine Valley line south.
