Experienced Front-End Developer

Role description

To help us build and maintain an amazing B2C Travel Tech product (, using technologies like Ruby on Rails, React, TypeScript, Redux and Modular CSS, we’re searching for an experienced web developer. We're happy to consider anyone with demonstrable Rails, JavaScript and React experience and a desire to learn and grow. This is a fully remote role.

About you

Our ideal candidate meets many - but not necessarily all - of the below criteria.

  • 5+ years of professional web development experience
  • Deep knowledge of and experience in JavaScript/ES2015+, React, HTML and CSS/SCSS
  • Knowledge of and experience in JavaScript build and bundling tools such as Webpack
  • Experience in working with single-page applications and the React ecosystem
  • Knowledge of Ruby on Rails
  • Demonstrated experience with remote work, self-motivation, and asynchronous communication
  • You’re excited about the future of the web platform, the JavaScript ecosystem and are motivated to help Rail Europe adopt modern front-end technologies and always improve our website
  • You take pride in your craft and adhere to industry best practices for testing, code linting, peer review, and clean modular maintainable code
  • You strive to discover and understand the root cause of problems, suggesting new and improved solutions, rather than treating the symptoms
  • Fluent in English, even if it’s not your first language. Our current team comes from more 7 different countries and we’re excited to add more!
  • You’re confident communicating and sharing complex information and learnings with both technical and non-technical team members
  • You have a good understanding of Agile working
  • You can work hours that have some overlap with Paris daytime
  • Would be happy to be a contractor with a daily rate within the range of £275 and £300 (or equivalent in another currency)

Rail Europe is an online booking service for train travel throughout Europe. Our mission is to make booking trains anywhere in Europe as easy and affordable as possible, from epic international adventures to everyday local commutes. We’ve been selling tickets since 2012.

Our tech team has a remote-first culture, which means we choose the best person for the job, regardless of geography. Our work is built on trust, empathy, and shared knowledge, with both customers and colleagues at the center of what we do.

Whilst we don’t expect you to be a master of the following technologies, our current software stack consists of:

  • a Ruby on Rails/CoffeeScript/SCSS website
  • a React-based single page application for our mobile site and hybrid mobile apps
  • a hybrid iOS app written in Swift
  • a hybrid Android app written in Kotlin
  • a Ruby on Rails/Ruby back-end + PostgreSQL and Redis storage
  • a Ruby library for communicating with train booking APIs
  • AWS hosted Docker infrastructure with continuous delivery
