UK glamping by train

UK glamping by train

With camping poised to be part of the new normal, and a big resurgence predicted for this year, we think glamping is perfect for train lovers. No car filled with gear, just a train ticket, backpack and a yearning for the outdoors. Whether you are looking for family glamping, glam glamping or beach camping, we have something for everyone.

For those of us who aren’t quite ready to explore the wild campers within, but still like the notion of sleeping under canvas or in a funky caravan, glamping holidays are the answer. Most camping experts will admit that, unless you have got it down to a fine art, there is a lot of gear to be taken on camping holidays. Filling a car boot with paraphernalia is a tiresome feature of most camping holidays and one that most people dread. Which is why we are sharing our top UK glamping sites accessible by train. Just book, pack and go wild (ish).

Ivy Grange Farm, Suffolk

With four yurts (called Barn Owl, Yellowhammer, Lapwing, Swallow) and a shepherd’s hut in a wildflower meadow, this sustainably managed farm is the perfect introduction to the tranquil county of Suffolk. Ivy Grange Farm also offers a £12 discount on a yurt booking for those arriving by train, and they will also collect you from Brampton station, just over 3km away. They have bikes on site if you want to head out along the North Sea Route or Sustrans Route 1.

Isle of Wight

We are big fans of the Isle of Wight, especially as you can book a train ticket that includes the ferry crossing with us. It’s a small island and so getting anywhere by taxi from the port is easy, but there is also an excellent bus network. Or, if you take your bike, there are numerous cycling trails as well as bike rental companies at Ryde and Yarmouth. Two of the best glamping sites are Vintage Vacations airstream caravans and Tom's Eco Lodge the latter boasting a range of safari tents, pods and cabins. Both are about as glampingly gorgeous as it gets.

Westley Farm, Gloucestershire

In the heart of the Cotswolds, choose between Westley Farm’s variety of glamping glories: A Zen Den cedar cabin, two ridiculously stunning yurts that will make you feel like royalty and a Gold Rush cabin, with a wooden terrace overlooking the meadow and surrounding woodlands. The golden nugget is that it is also only 10 mins taxi journey from Kemble and Stroud stations, or a 10km cycle.

Treetops Treehouse, Devon

In the grounds of the Fox and Hounds Hotel in Eggesford, just 250m from the station, is a stunning luxury treehouse. A Devonian dream house really, perched above a trout pond, it’s wrapped around an ancient oak and built sensitively to respect this magnificent natural structure. With two bedrooms, one with a king size bed and the other a children’s room with two small singles, the lounge even has a wood burner. There is a copper bath and, here’s the golden glamping moment, there is even a dishwasher. Camping purists will be appalled. However, anyone with child within will jump up and down with excitement.

Alexander House, Scotland

Just 3.3km from Gleneagles station, Alexander House in the Perthshire Hills hotel has two luxury yurts and a cosy cabin called Juniper. The perfect location if you are travelling with friends who want to do the hotel thing while you do the outdoors thing. Albeit in luxury with king size beds, wood burners, ensuite bathrooms in conjoined yurts (really) and wood-fired hot tubs. The hotel is happy to pick up guests arriving by train at the station.

Chiltern Yurt Retreat, Buckinghamshire

Just an hour from London and 20 mins walk from Wendover station in Buckinghamshire, a woodland ‘Badgers’ Bower’, hazelwood cabin and 2 person yurt await at Chiltern Yurt Retreat. Wake up to the sound of a stream from the Chiltern Hills or myriad birdlife and walk straight onto the Chiltern Hills from Wendover, with local Wendover Woods a wonderful spot for both hiking and biking. Aston Hill Bike Park in Wendover Woods is one of the region’s premier mountain biking areas.
