Overview

The Intercity 225 is used mainly on LNER’s services between London to Leeds, York and Edinburgh alongside their more recent state-of-the-art Azuma trains.

Intercity 225s are electric trains, all of which have been refurbished since they were first introduced about 25 years ago. Each train has nine air conditioned, open-plan carriages of which three are designated as First Class. The name Intercity 225 comes from the train’s nominal top speed of 225km/h. In practice, though, Intercity 225 trains never run on the UK network at more than 200km/h.

Practical information

Before you board

Always make sure that you hold a valid ticket before boarding the train.

Some UK train stations require travellers to validate their tickets through automatic gates. Simply insert your ticket orange-side-up into the slot in the gate and it will pop back up through a slot at the top. Take your ticket and the gates will open. If there are no automatic barriers at the station, ticket control will take place once onboard.

Onboard

Each Intercity 225 train has over 500 seats and air conditioning comes as standard. Coach B in Standard is the quiet coach and there is no quiet coach in First Class. There are good luggage facilities onboard Intercity 225 trains, particularly in First Class. You can take your bike on the train, but this service needs to be pre-booked. LNER’s Cafe Bars are in coach J or H with a varied menu of snacks, hot and cold drinks including a selection of alcoholic beverages. They also cater for vegetarians and offer a reduced price on hot drinks if you use your reusable cup.

Booking and printing options

Intercity 225 train tickets are open for bookings 84 days in advance.

Seat reservation is advisable in both First and Standard Class on Intercity 225 trains, though not required.

Get the lowest prices on Intercity 225 trains by booking early and don’t wait until the last minute as cheaper seats sell out quickly.

Advance tickets offer discounts of up to 80% for bookings made well in advance.

Using a railcard may also help to get further discounts when booking UK trains.

Opt for off-peak Intercity 225 trains when you have to travel at short notice. Off-peak Intercity 225 trains are more affordable than ones that run mornings and evenings, Fridays and Sundays or during popular holidays.

Classes of service

Intercity 225 trains provide two classes of service: Standard Class and First Class.

Intercity 225 First Class

Seating in First Class is more spacious than in Standard Class, with three leather seats across a central aisle rather than four. Almost every seat is at a table. Only a very small number of seats in First Class are arranged in airline style, and these are always singles. With your First Class ticket, you gain free wifi on board and have access to First Class lounges at selected stations.

In First Class, there is an at seat-service which is included in the price of your ticket. From Monday to Friday, a cooked breakfast is served, then later wraps, sandwiches or a simple warm dish, and in the evening a meal followed by dessert or a cheese board. On weekends, there is a more limited menu of snacks available, appropriate to the time of day, including hot and cold drinks. Alcoholic beverages are offered for free during the week, but not on weekends.

Intercity 225 Standard Class

In Standard Class, seating is arranged in airline-style seats that come in pairs, arranged across a central aisle. A small number of seats are arranged in seats of four around a table. Wifi is available in Standard Class, but usually subject to a fee.

There is an at-seat trolley service in Standard Class, offering snacks, sandwiches and hot and cold drinks.

Child and youth passengers

The definition of "Child" and "Youth" varies by country and operator. This is why we ask for the age of young passengers.

Sometimes children below a certain age can travel without a seat for free. If you want to guarantee a seat for child passengers, enter '6' as the age of the child.
