Trains to Visp
The town of Visp (Viège in French) in Switzerland’s Valais canton is the railway station where skiers bound for Saas-Fee switch from trains to buses for the final leg of their journey to the resort. Although first and foremost a winter destination, Saas-Fee offers year-round skiing and the highest funicular railway in the world – oddly enough the funicular is entirely underground, so don’t expect mountain views.
The railway station at Visp is a five-minute walk north of the town centre. It’s a striking glass affair which serves one of Switzerland’s major rail interchanges. Hourly trains speed to Berne in 57 minutes and to Zurich in just over two hours. There are two trains each hour to Montreux, Lausanne and Geneva. The station is an important stop on the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB) which offers twice-hourly local trains to Zermatt and an hourly service to Andermatt. Glacier Express trains between Zermatt and St Moritz also stop at Visp.
International destinations pop up occasionally on the destination boards at Visp station. There are three EuroCity trains each day to Milan, just over two hours away. You can also take direct trains to Verona and Venice.
