Thello EuroCity
There are direct trains each day from Genoa to Nice. These are EuroCity services operated by Thello. Additional connections are available with a change of train at Ventimiglia, but this does add around an hour to the journey time.
The entire route from Genoa to Nice broadly follows the Mediterranean coast, first skirting the Riviera di Ponente west to the French border and thereafter the Côte d’Azur. For the best sea views, sit on the left side of the train. You’ll cross the Italian-French border between Ventimiglia and Menton. Not long thereafter you’ll traverse the territory of Monaco – but don’t expect fine views of the principality, for the train runs in a tunnel under Monaco.
Genova Piazza Principe to Nice

The direct Thello trains to Nice leave from Genoa Piazza Principe station. They are classified as EuroCity services, but in terms of their design and on-board facilities, they are broadly similar to the Frecciabianca trains used on domestic routes within Italy. This is not a high-speed service, with trains on the Genoa to Nice route making 10 intermediate stops. It’s a route where trains dawdle rather than dash, but that’s all the better as there is some great coastal scenery. Arrival is at Nice Ville station.
