InterRegio & Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn
It is a very easy journey by train from Geneva Airport to Zermatt. The tickets we sell for this route are completely flexible and can be used on any train within one month of the date of the ticket. So you don’t need to worry about being tied to a particular train if your flight is delayed.
The journey starts with a Swiss Railways train from Geneva Airport to Visp. All trains on this route stop at the city centre station in Geneva ten minutes after leaving the airport. The line then skirts the north shore of Lake Geneva, making this a very memorable journey. Sit on the right side of the train for the best views of the lake. Upon arrival in Visp, you transfer onto a narrow-gauge train of the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn (MGB) for the last hour of the journey. That train climbs up out of the Rhône Valley to Zermatt.
Bear in mind that we issue paper tickets for this journey, so book at least ten days prior to travel so that we can post your tickets to you.
Geneva Airport to Visp
Direct trains from Geneva Airport to Visp leave from the main airport railway station which is underground; it is well signed from the main terminal building. The route is served by Swiss InterRegio trains making 10 to 13 intermediate stops along the way.
This is a magnificent journey for sightseeing. On a good day, you’ll have wonderful views across Lake Geneva to the Alps beyond. There is an especially lovely stretch east of Lausanne as the railway cuts through the Lavaux vineyards. Just after Montreux you’ll see the famous Château de Chillon on the lakeshore to your right and then the train follows the broad valley of the River Rhône up through Valais vineyards to Visp.
Visp to Zermatt
Trains of the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn leave for Zermatt from platform 3 at Visp station. Services run every half hour during the day, but only hourly (or even less) in the evenings. The 36-kilometre journey takes 65 to 70 minutes. Sounds slow? Once you see the difficult terrain, you’ll understand why. This is a very challenging mountain route.
There are six intermediate stations between Visp and Zermatt, though at two of these the train stops only upon request. Zermatt station is an extraordinary supersized Swiss chalet – a nice introduction to the surreal circus of Zermatt life.
