Regional Train
Take the train from Florence to Siena to discover a quieter Tuscany. Siena still pulls the crowds, but not to the same extent as Florence. The first part of the route runs west down the Arno Valley to Empoli, where the train turns south and climbs slowly into the hills. As you head south, the hillsides close in and you have a sense of travelling back in time. There are glimpses of medieval hilltop villages and before long you are arriving in Siena.
Florence S.M.N. to Siena
All trains from Florence to Siena start their journey at Florence Santa Maria Novella and then call at Firenze Rifredi station six minutes later. The trains on this route are regional services designed mainly for local passengers. Most trains stop five times along the way, though some stop at up to nine stations. The two main towns on the line are Empoli and Poggibonsi. Alight at the latter if you are bound for San Gimignano.
Although it’s perfectly possible to hike from the station in Siena up to the town centre, it’s not the nicest of walks. Instead, take one of the buses that leave from opposite the station for the 5-minute ride into the middle of town.
