A highly advanced city, Zurich still offers utmost beauty

Zurich in a word ? Precision. Or perhaps – perfection. Where else but Zurich can you find an award-winning airport, dazzling city activities, and also Alpine splendor so close at hand. European train systems do run like clockwork, especially in Switzerland. Trains between the Zurich airport and main city center station run every few minutes, as well as to other towns in the area such as capital Bern and St Gallen.

About Switzerland

You’ll arrive into Zurich Hauptbahnhof, the city’s main station, where the lower level mall is home to over 200 stores. You may feel compelled to stay and shop, but oh, is there so much more above ground.

There’s almost no better place to be a window shopper than on the ritzy Bahnhofstrasse, the main shopping avenue.Think Bulgari, Hermes, Prada. The street is subdued elegance in spite of its luxurious commerce. Paradeplatz, one of the most famous squares in Switzerland, is at the end of the street and closest to Lake Zurich. Follow the Limmat River back from the lake through the lovely Old Town (Altstadt) and one of the most scenic spots in the city, Lindenhof Square. Perched above the old town and surrounded by lime trees (hence the Linde), this is a quiet respite away from shopping and sightseeing. Stare out at the river and forget about the time – if that’s possible in this city.

Seeing this is Switzerland, it would be a shame to just stay in Zurich and not see the magnificent Alps. Just 45-50 minutes away by train is the city of Lucerne. Known as the gateway to central Switzerland, it sits on its eponymous lake surrounded by mountainous majesty. Nearby, take an unforgettable ride on the world’s steepest cogwheel railway to the peak of Mt. Pilatus (50% discount with Mt Pilatus Add-on for Swiss Pass holders available through Rail Europe). Or visit the royal peak of Rigi – known as the “queen of the mountains.” And the best part - this is included in your Swiss Travel Pass.

In the opposite direction near Schaffhausen you can find the Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe and only an hour away. Take a boat ride to get front and center (and splashed.)

If you would like to spend the day exploring Zurich before taking the train to another town for the night (and why wouldn’t you, with the train, everything is so close), consider one of our two baggage programs. Don’t lug your luggage while touring the city. You need your hands for filled-up shopping bags. Choose either Fly Rail Baggage for transport of luggage from the airport you depart from to Zurich Airport onto your destination or Fast Baggage from the Hauptbahnhof. Both services will accept your luggage before boarding and will deliver them to your evening train destination for pick up there. Luggage lockers are available at the main station as well.

We’ve thought of everything to make your stay in Switzerland simply superb. Isn’t it time you visited ?

In cosmopolitan Zurich, you can munch on everything. Go to the famous Confiserie Sprüngli to have a taste of their chocolate inventions before going to the Niederdorf area where you can taste the trademark Züri Gschnetzlets dish veal in cream and mushroom sauce) and rosti (grated, fried potatoes). The local wines are Riesling, white Rauschling and light red Clevner.

Go to the Bahnhofstrasse, one of the world’s most exclusive shopping avenues. The old town is also a very attractive shopping area with fashion, jewellery and antiques shops as well as the smaller and more traditional boutiques. Head to Schipfe to find craftsmen who sell their handmade products along the river. Join locals in a spot of ‘lädele’ the pasttime of shopping and strolling. Explore the multicultural Langstrasse quarter where young Swiss designers have set up shop.
