Dresden Day Trip from Berlin
Explore the city of Dresden, one of the cultural centers of Germany, on a day trip from Berlin. Take a guided walking tour of Dresden and hear interesting stories about the city’s vibrant history from your expert guide. Discover the city’s main sights, including the Semperoper (Semper Opera), the Zwinger and the Frauenkirche (Church of our Lady). After the guided portion of your tour, the afternoon is yours to explore Dresden at your leisure. Stroll through the baroque city, explore the many green parks, or relax by the riverbanks of the Elbe, overlooking the skyline of Dresden.
What You Can Expect
After meeting your guide in central Berlin, sit back and relax aboard an air-conditioned coach during your 2-hour journey to Dresden. When you arrive in Dresden, also known as the 'Jewel Box' because of its rococo and baroque city center, your guide will show you the city on a walking tour.
Learn about Dresden's history and how it served as a cultural capital between 1806 and 1918 under reign of the Saxon Kings. As you walk around, learn about the tragic end of World War 2 and hear about the controversial bombing in February 1945, during which the whole city center was destroyed. After the city's reconstruction and since the reunification of Germany in 1990, Dresden has regained importance as one of the country's cultural centers, now featuring 56 galleries, 44 museums and 36 theaters, including the former royal treasure collection, the 'Green Vault.'
See the neo-Renaissance Semperoper opera house, in which the world-famous composer Richard Wagner held some of his premiers. Next to the opera house is the Zwinger, one of the most delightful baroque constructions in Germany. Once a palace for parties and celebrations for the royals, it now houses museums including the Old Masters Picture Gallery featuring among others Raphael's Sistine Madonna and a porcelain museum. Admire the impressive and newly rebuilt Frauenkirche, completely destroyed in 1945, which served as a war memorial in the German Democratic Republic and was not rebuilt until 2005.
By midday, you'll have time at your leisure to explore this interesting city. To get a feel for it like a true local, have lunch (own expense) at one of the many kneipen (pubs) in Weisse Gasse, a pedestrianized area in the old town. Later, you can visit the sights you saw on your walking tour from the outside in more detail, stroll along the beautiful river Elbe, visit Dresden's many parks, or enjoy a cold beer in a Biergarten (beer garden) overlooking the baroque skyline.

I liked how they organised things. We were quite many so they arranged two buses. I liked the guide Nadaf, he was very informative and funny. On the way he told us about Berlin, places we passed through and Dresden, combining history, geography and economy, so we could have a pretty good picture. We started in Dresden with a well paced walk, he took us through the old town, and then we had time on our own, which I spent visiting the Palace.
We had a terrific day trip to Dresden and our guide certainly knew her stuff. The walking tour around Dresden was very informative and we learnt lots that we never knew before. I have to admit I had never heard of Viator before this trip and was a bit dubious as to whether they were going to be any good but the reviews from fellow travellers made me book, and we certainly were not disappointed. Thank you.
This is a long day trip, but well worth the effort, as Dresden is a most interesting and beautiful city. Our guide, Alex, was entertaining and informative, kept us awake on the outward trip and let us sleep on the return journey. The tour of Dresden was extensive and included many highlights that we had wanted to see, but also provided sufficient free time for shopping, cake discoveries etc.
I already submitted a lengthy review on the day after I took the tour. The tour was very informative and enjoyable and very well organised and definitely to be highly recommended.
Fabulous !! our guide Alex was amazing !!! very informative and i learned a lot during the trip from Berlin to Dresden. Dresden itself is gorgeous and i would come back.
Excellent, bright, knowledgeable tour leader. Much to see and learn, with architecture and history to fill one's heart and mind. Tour leader was a perfect hostess and human being
This is one highlight of our trip. Dresden is a lovely city with so much history behind it. Our guide Alex made it more interesting with her extensive and informative commentary. She was a tireless tourguide.
This tour was very well-managed and our guide was knowledgeable about Dresden history and German history, in general. The coach ride to and from the city was comfortable and plenty of time was given to explore the city on your own.
If you take this our and you are lucky enough to have Alex as your guide you are in for a wonderful day. Alex is a female, by the way.. As we left the City of Berlin bound for Dresden she filled us in on early and contemporary history related to the area. The drive to Dresden went by in a flash. Alex escorted the tour through the City Center - again with detailed commentary about the buildings and that families that contributed to the rich history of Dresden. We had some free time with lunch on our own. We went to the market square for a quick sausage lunch and then enjoyed dessert at the bakery made famous by the movie The Grand Budapest Hotel. There are two restored churches in the City Center: a Protestant Church and a Catholic Church. Don't miss the Protestant Church - it is really unique inside and very beautiful.
Tour was very interesting and very professional person did it.
An exceptionally well organised and run tour with a stunning city to visit and enjoy
We loved this tour
Excellent tour. We only had the opportunity for a one day tour of Dresden and this met our expectations. The guide was particularly excellent. I would recommend this tour to others.
A visit to Dresden is a must and this tour was extremely good. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommended
Wonderful excursion. Alex was very knowledgeable and communicated clearly. She is a wealth of information and very personable, despite the large size of the group.
I greatly enjoyed the Dresden Day Trip from Berlin. Alex was witty and insightful. I am quite a history buff and just loved the overview of Martin Luther, the Augustus legacy, and the WWII history. This was a great day and I feel fortunate that I had this experience.
I made the day trip to Dresden from Berlin with the local tour operator. The group consisted of 32 people. There was a bus driver and a guide named Alex, a 25 year old woman coming from Australia.
She was very enthusiasticly. From the beginning it was clear that she had the skills to lead a group.
The bus was comfortable. During the bus ride the guide told us interesting facts about Berlin, Brandenburg and Dresden. I was impressed to hear about the backgrounds of the bomb attacks on Dresden in February 1945. The bus made one stop. If that could be skipped, it should be skipped, because in my opinion it's a waste of time. After three hours we arrived in Dresden. What a very beautiful city!
We made a guided walking tour of two hours in Dresden and Alex told us interesting stories about the sightseeings. After the walking tour we had 2 hours leisure time for ourselves.
During the bus ride back to Berlin Alex asked every passenger if he or she had any questions. She took enough time for every person to answer questions. I would strongly recommend this tour. I enjoyed the day trip to Dresden very much.
A very informative and enjoyable tour.
Dressed is a wonderful, historic city and well worth visiting.
Our tour guide, Alex, did a fantastic job and was a treasure of knowledge.
We wish we would have more time.
A great day trip..sadly it was a bit wet when we arrived in Dresden but it did become fine. The reconstructed city was amazing and the museum visits made it all worthwhiel
the dat trip was long but good, the guide was extremely good ,informative, helpful, and funny, all helps to make for a good day trip
Lior guided us through the beautiful remains of Dresden's old city providing an excellent tour of its history. Even the bus ride there was very informative. Would recommend to anyone as part of their Berlin visit
I had never heard of Dresden before this trip but I'm glad I went. This tour was great! Our tour guide knew a lot about Dresden and her enthusiasm made the tour even better. There was also enough time to walk around, get something to eat, and do a bit of shopping. All in all, great trip!
It was a wonderful day trip. Everything ran according to plan, and our Guide Asaf was excellent and gave a a great deal of information. I would recommend the local tour company.
Excellent day trip. Beautiful city and our tour guide was amazing. She knew really knew her history of the city.
