Exchanges & Refunds

  • How do I complete an online exchange or refund?

If you set up a Rail Europe online account you will need to log in to your account to do an exchange or refund. If you did not set up an online account, please click here to start your exchange and refund.

Please note: You will need your booking number and the email address you provided when placing the order.

  • I have an e-ticket, can I exchange this ticket online?

Only e-tickets purchased on our website can be exchanged online. These exchanges are based on availability for the new trip you wish to take and are subject to an exchange fee. If you did not purchase your e-ticket online, please call 847-916-1028 to start the exchange process. Please review the Exchange Policy for your ticket. It's important to note that the exchange time frame is based on the train departure time zone in Europe.

  • Will I receive an email confirmation that my exchange has been completed?

No, you will not receive an email confirmation.
However, after you’ve processed exchange online, you will get to a confirmation page which will have a link to view your new ticket information. Please click on this link to view your new e-ticket. If you selected Print at Home, please print your ticket. If you selected Print at the Station, please print the page (which is not your ticket) or jot down your e-ticket number to use when retrieving your ticket at the European train station self-service kiosk.

  • Why must I print both the old and new itinerary versions of my "Print at Home" e-ticket when doing an exchange?

Your original e-ticket has the bar code that will be scanned by the conductor. Your new e-ticket is a boarding pass for your new itinerary, and as such it is necessary to have both versions to board the train.

  • Is there a difference in fees if exchanges are done by Rail Europe’s issuing office versus when done online through Rail Europe’s website?

Yes, online exchanges are subject to a 5% fee. Exchanges done by Rail Europe’s issuing office are subject to a 7% administration fee for paper documents.

  • I have a paper ticket, can I exchange this ticket online?

No, you cannot exchange your paper ticket online. If the ticket does allow for an exchange, it should be returned to Rail Europe at least 2 business days prior to the train departure date for an exchange within the time frame allowed by the ticket. Please call 847-916-1028 to start the exchange process. For hours of operation, and further details please click on the “HELP” icon located on the upper right hand corner of this page.

  • I have an e-ticket, can I refund this ticket online?

We are able to offer online cancellations and/or refunds on all unused e-tickets purchased on our website. The e-tickets may be subject to a cancellation fee. Please review the fare rules as noted on your email confirmation to check if a refund on your fare is applicable.

  • Why do I get an error message that my booking is not associated with this website?

Exchanges and refunds are only offered on the site upon which your order was placed. Please ensure you are on the correct site and all your information is correct.

  • I purchased e-tickets online, why can’t I do an exchange or refund online?

We can not accommodate your exchange or refund online for one or more of the following reasons:

    • Exchanges and refunds are only available if the e-tickets were purchased using one credit card (vs. multiple cards or Bill Me Later).
    • The travel date of your ticket is now passed and all exchanges and refunds must be done by the Rail Europe, Inc. issuing office.
    • If you selected a “Print at the Station” e-ticket and have already printed your ticket at the station, to receive an exchange or refund you must now send the original paper ticket to the Rail Europe, Inc. issuing office to receive a refund. Exchanges may be possible to do locally in Europe, based on the rules of your ticket.
    • Online exchanges and refunds are only available up to and including the date of your train departure.  After this time, you can send an email to Rail Europe, Inc. for your e-ticket to be canceled or call 847-916-1028 for exchanges. Please note that exchanges and refunds are only processed during normal business hours.

  • Why can’t I refund certain travel documents online?

Some products are non-refundable once issued and as such, a refund is not applicable. Please check on your email invoice or on the paper document to check if a refund or exchange is possible for the purchased product.

Please note: Only for e-tickets can exchanges and refunds be processed online. For paper tickets and other travel documents, we require the actual unused items to be shipped to us in order to conduct a refund review.

  • I've already printed my Print at Home e-ticket, but now I can't travel. Can I get a refund?

It depends of the type of ticket you purchased. If the ticket is non-refundable and non-exchangeable, no refunds can be issued. Please refer to the terms and conditions on your confirmation email to view the refund policy.

  • What is the refund for unused or partially used passes?

We’re sorry, but we can only provide refunds for totally unused or unvalidated passes. For more details, please refer to our Terms and Conditions.

  • What is the refund policy for tickets?

Policies vary depending on the type of train and fare that you book.  Just check the “View Fare & Accommodation Detail” tab of each fare for more specifics.

Refunds, when applicable, pertain to totally unused and unvalidated tickets only. Tickets received after the first day of validity are refundable if canceled and stamped "not-used" by a railway official, at the station of departure. A minimum 15% cancellation charge will apply.

In addition, refunds and exchanges are subject to a 7% administrative fee per train ticket.
