Overview

The Eurail Select Pass including Italy and Switzerland gives you extensive travel on the national rail networks of Italy and Switzerland, with your choice of first or second class rail travel for 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 10 days within a two-month period. This pass offers saver discounts for 2 or more traveling together and Youth discounts in second class only. You can also decide whether you’d prefer those travel days to be consecutive or non-consecutive.

Rail passes are available in 1, 2, 3 or 4 country combinations for extensive travel on the national rail networks. Going for an extended trip? Try the Eurail Global Pass offering rail travel in 28 different countries.

2. Reserve your seats

Taking local and regional trains allows you to explore at will. Simply board with your rail pass and choose any open seat. Reservations are required on most high speed, overnight, scenic, and international trains. With the Eurail Italy - Switzerland Pass you may travel on Frecciabianca, Frecciarossa, Frecciagento, and the Swiss trains. We recommend always checking your desired journey for any specific seat reservation requirements.

3. Activate and travel

Q. What type of accommodation comes with a Rail Pass ?
A. First class Rail Pass allows you to travel in all sleeper accommodations. Second class Rail Pass allows you to travelin T3 compartments. Some T4 are available with First or Second class Rail Passes. You should check the details to know on which class the T4 is offered.
Q. What are the main destinations Italo trains connect to?
A. Italo trains offer high speed train services connecting the major cities of Italy such as Milano, Bologna, Firenze, Roma, Napoli, Salerno, Venezia, Torino and Padova. There are several daily connections between the main cities which are served by Italo. There are several daily connections between Milan and Roma and the number of connections will increase in the following years.
Q. What is the baggage limitation when travelling on board Frecciarossa trains ?
A. Passengers can carry up to 2 large bags and 1 piece of hand luggage. Passengers are sole responsible for their luggage in the Frecciarossa trains.
Q. Are there WC and other amenities onboard trains ?
A. Yes, trains have water closet or toilets which are easily accessible and are clearly marked with a WC sign. If you want to use the WC, you will find them in front or at the back or each carriage. They include a washbasin.
Q. Does the Eurail Italy Pass offer any special of discounted fares ?
A. Yes, you can obtain a discount for ferry crossings or even a free crossing on a ferry. Holders of an Eurail Italy Pass also benefit from great offers to visit museums and monument.
Q. Do Lyria trains have a catering service ?
A. Yes and they are located in carriage 4 or 14, in the middle of the Lyria train. The TGV Lyria bar offers tasty snacks and meals : sandwiches, hot/cold local dishes, salads, children’s menu, hot and cold drinks. An at seat service is available for those travelling in First class.
Q. What are the restaurant facilities onboard trains ?
A. Most trains have a bar-buffet service. Meals and beverages can also be served at your seat. Some trains have a trolley service. Some night trains and scenic trains have a dining car, where you can sit down and have a pleasant meal. Dining cars are very much part of a unique train experience. Some trains offer a high quality of food and wine which matches that of a gourmet restaurant.
Q. When taking an overnight train, do I have to use 2 days on my Rail Pass ?
A. Not necessarily. If you use the 7PM rule and a direct train, you don’t have to use 2 days. The 7:00 PM rule applies if you take the night train AFTER 7:00 PM on a set date. Then only the arrival date is counted as a travel day. This is only valid if you have used your Pass before 7:00 PM on any train. If not, you will have to enter both dates.
Q. How much time in advance, can I book tickets for TGV trains ?
A. You can book your ticket to travel on board the TGV up to 3 months in advance. That’s 90 days early, during which time you can plan your trip to France thoroughly. You can buy your tickets at the earliest to have the best fares.
Q. What is the main difference between First class and Second class on the TGV (French high speed trains) ?
A. TGV’s First class includes comfortable reclining seats ; food and beverages are available for purchase at the buffet car. However, if Premier service is offered a meal is included in the fare.
