Interlaken: Your Gateway to Adventure
Interlaken, from Latin “Inter Lacus” (Between lakes), is small city in the Bernese Oberland Region and located near the center of Switzerland. The town began as a convent of the Augustinians back in 1130 and lasted over 300 years. Today the town is a well known tourist destination and gateway to year-round adventures.
Don’t think because you’re high in the mountains that it never warms up. In summer, the temperature can reach up into the 70s. Swim in Lake Thun, hike Harder Mountains, bike around Lake Brienz on your wait to Giessbach Waterfall. Looking for more rugged adventure? Bungee jump, rock climb or paraglide down from jagged cliffs.
Winter is…cold. Perfect for snowy pursuits. Skiing and snowboarding are found all over the region. Grindewald First and Murren-Schilthorn are two of the most popular places to get your shuss on.
Whatever the weather, it’s always “peak” season at nearby Jungfroujoch. Imagine feeling on top of the world and being there too. At over 11,000 feet above sea level, Jungfroujoch is the highest railway station in Europe. Leaving from Kleine Scheidegg, you ascend nearly 1400 meters and cover a distance of more than four miles up to the top – also known as the “Sphinx.” When you arrive at the Eiger Glacier station, sit a while. Take it all in. Have a bite at the “Top of Europe” restaurant. It really is a taste of Heaven.
Back down in Interlaken, there are two rail stations. Interlaken Ost (East) and Interlaken West. With a distance of one mile between the two, they simply serve different destinations. To get to the mountains and Lucerne – take the East. To arrive from major cities like Zurich, Geneva and Bern, hop on the West (or the East, either will do).
Your railpass for Switzerland also includes boat services. In spring, summer and fall, take off to Lake Thun or Lake Brienz. Wind in your hair, mountains majesty as your backdrop. From Interlaken, you can get on board the panoramic Golden Pass train that trails through the Bernese Oberland to Lucerne. This route is among the finest railway experiences to be had anywhere in the world – thanks to the breathtaking views.
Interlaken is more than mountains. During the summer, the annual Greenfield Festival brings together modern rock acts from around the world. Every September, 4000-plus runners from over 50 countries take part in the world's most beautiful marathon, The Jungfrau Marathon.
You don’t need to breathlessly run 26.2 miles to see the city. Just come with your Swiss Rail Pass. The views alone will take your breath away.
