France

France’s civilization, history and way of life lures travelers from everywhere

Throughout time, France, its civilization, its history and its way of life—the savoir-faire of its people—has lured rail travelers from around the world. The fact that it is among the easiest countries to travel by train makes it all the more appealing. Its TGV trains hold the world’s friction rail speed record at 357 mph (575kmph). Rail lines, stretching some 19,188 miles (30,880km), go almost anywhere—and rapidly.

France is a land to be savored, not sped through. Each region is so intriguing and varied that it’s easy to immerse yourself in one province for too long. Overall, it’s better to get to know a few regions intimately rather than trying to explore them all.

Of course, the primary language of the country is French, which might intimidate non speakers, though it shouldn’t—most tourism officials and rail personnel speak at least some English. So you should have little trouble riding the rails and getting your questions answered. And, as a final plus, though train travel is not cheap in France when compared to other countries, it’s unquestionably the most economical way to see the country.
