Where sybarites come to ski and be seen

Where sybarites come to ski and be seen

Looking for glamour, charm, ambience, excitement and the opportunity to ski in one of the most fashionable areas of the Swiss Alps or, perhaps, even the world ? Pack your bags, your snowsuit, your après-ski ensemble and fashionable Swiss Travel Pass and head to St. Moritz, Switzerland.

Situated next to Engadine’s lakescape at 1,856 meters above sea level, the bubbly "champagne atmosphere" is as legendary as the St. Moritz sun, which shines on an average of 322 days a year. This trendy resort city attracts aristocracy, jet-setters, movie stars, and now…you.

On the southern side of the Alps in the Upper Engadine, St. Moritz was originally known for its mineral springs, likely discovered by the Celts some 3,000 years ago. From Roman times through the Middle Ages, visitors came here in summer to experience the spring waters’ curative powers. It was not until 1834 that the first winter guest stayed in the area. The earliest skiers appeared on the scene in 1859 and in 1864, a pension owner, Johannes Badrutt, brought a group of English people to St. Moritz to spend the winter, starting what has grown into a flood of tourism. In 1896, he opened a hotel, the Badrutt Palace, which is one of the most luxe ski chalets in the world.
