All trains lead to the eternal city

All trains lead to the eternal city

Rome is a city of myth, legend, history and Fellini. The evidence of its extensive past is all around you as you wander through its history-soaked streets and movie-set-worthy beauty. Rome is more than – well – a forum for ruins. It’s true no visit to the Eternal city would be complete without seeing the Coliseum – once able to hold 50,000 spectators including the emperor, nobles and gladiators.

Another must see is the Pantheon, whose name alone means, “to every God”, and is one of the best preserved buildings in Rome. Stand under the open oculus with your head up to the heavens.

About Italy

With the help of local transport, you can avoid getting behind the wheel of a rental car or dare a bare-knuckled cab ride – even after you arrive at the airport. If arriving through Fiumicino, you can take the Leonardo Airport Express to the Rome Termini train station. In just 30 minutes you’ll be in downtown Rome. The express train runs every half hour and is covered with a first class Eurail pass that includes Italy. Traveling on the express will require you to use a travel day on your rail pass. If you plan to travel outside of Rome this is a great way to use your pass because you should be able to catch a train leaving from Termini station, to many other Italian cities.

All roads may lead to Rome, but the traffic will leave you at a standstill. Rome offers three main train stations : Termini, Tiburtina and Ostiense. The main station is the Termini and is certainly more than just a train station. Much like a mall, fine shops and restaurants to keep you busy. Try not to miss your train !

Friends, Romans and Countrymen – all ride the rails. And it’s easy to see why. Le Frecce, regional and long distance trains can be taken from the Termini station and connect you to any destination in Italy. Be in Florence in less than two hours. See Michelangelo’s David and be back by dinner. Linger on a bridge in Venice in just four hours. Head to Naples for pizza in about 1-2 hours. From top to toe, Italy is easy to navigate thanks to the rail system. But why stop here ? See Switzerland, France and Greece. We have rail passes that cover the countries you want to see. Build your own empire – one passport stamp at a time.

If only Marco Polo had it so easy.

Try local specialities like trippa alla Romana, tripe in tomato sauce and Pecorino cheese, and saltimbocca alla Romana, veal scallops with wine, sage and prosciutto in the trattorias of Trastevere and Testaccio districts. Wash down with Frascati wine and leave room for mouthwatering Roman gelato (ice cream). Don’t miss Piazza Campo de’ Fiori’s fruit and veg market.

Via dei Condotto is designer central, lined with Armani, Prada and the rest while pedestrianised Via del Corso is crammed with global brands. Art lovers love browsing the galleries and antique shops around Piazza Navona while Sunday’s Porta Portese flea market is a Roman institution.

"My husband and I had a lovely ride from Roma Termini to Milano Centrale this summer - the seats were comfortable, the snack selection was totally sufficient, and even though we had a 40 minute delay, we were kept well-informed of the status and the train's progress. Til next time we get to ride the rails on Frecciarossa again ! "
