Nathan’s Villa got Mama’s hostel setup and running (staff regularly hangs out together at Wodka Bar amoungst other places).Do not go to Bling Bling, Dizzy Daisy, Orange or Atlantis unless you *have* to. When you get off the train you’ll understand because you’ll see people in *Hostel Information* shirts, but really they work for the bad hostels that have such a horrible reputation that they have to stick 12 kids in those deceptive shirts in the stations to recruit people to stay there. On that note if you see people swarming you to stay in their hostel BAD SIGN!!As for the trains I’ve done the Krakow to Prague and back, the Budapest to Krakow and back and the Berlin to Krakow and back. All 3 are the routes to be careful with. Best thing you can do is get a couchette (small sleeper compartment). The lock on the door can be opened by the conductor or passport people, but there’s an *additional* thick chain lock that they can’t open (without making a lot of noise). Other good part is you get sheets, pillow and a blanket and can lay down for the long train ride (budapest to krakow is 10 hours )Usually people get robbed because they leave bags in the open, don’t keep their valuables with them or take expensive items out in front of other people and advertise that they have things that might be good to steal. night trains I would put my board shorts on and my passport, credit cards, money and phone in the pocket and track pants over that. I also had a cable lock that I would lock to the bed and run the cable under my pillow. Someone moved the bag I’d know.Hope that helps. I just spent the summer living in Krakow and working in the industry. Fun times. =)
