Location: Oxford, United Kingdom
Duration: 24 or 48 hours
City Sightseeing Oxford Hop-On Hop-Off Tour
Discover the beautiful city of Oxford with a City Sightseeing hop-on hop-off bus tour. An easy and convenient way to travel between sights, your ticket offers unlimited travel for 24 or 48 hours. See iconic University of Oxford buildings such as Christ Church College and Bodleian Library, both of which were featured in several Harry Potter films, as well as heritage sights like Oxford Castle. Enjoy entertaining audio commentary, panoramic views and the freedom to hop on and off at any of the 20 well-placed city stops. Entrance fees not included.
What You Can Expect
Hop aboard your City Sightseeing open-air bus from any of the 20 routed stops that are conveniently situated around the city. Take a seat inside or on the open-air top deck, then sit back and relax as you ride through Oxford, home to the oldest university in the English-speaking world.
With your 24- or 48-hour ticket, choose to stay on the bus for the entire loop, or hop on and off at any of the stops to explore the city’s sights. See the Itinerary for a list of stops. As you travel, plug into the informative audio commentary and admire the timeworn, honey-colored buildings.
Perhaps hop off at the New Road stop to visit Oxford Castle. Learn how the medieval Norman castle was mostly destroyed during the English Civil War, with the remaining buildings then being transformed in to a prison.
After, maybe stop at Christ Church College, one of the largest colleges in the University of Oxford. Admire its grand façade then, if it’s open to the public at your time of visiting, head inside to discover its fascinating history. Learn about the many distinguished people who have studied here — including Albert Einstein and Lewis Carroll — and see the Great Hall, which has been featured in several of the Harry Potter movies.
Next, perhaps visit Sheldonian Theatre, which was designed by Sir Christopher Wren in the 17th century. This historical venue serves as the university’s official ceremonial hall, but it is open to the public when not in use. Choose to visit independently or join in with a guided tour, then head inside to explore the main theater. Gaze up at the majestic ceiling that was painted during the reign of King Charles II. Then, explore the attic before taking in 360-degree panoramic views of Oxford from the Cupola.
The full loop lasts around one hour, and buses arrive at each stop every 15, 20 or 30 minutes, depending on the season.

It was plain and simply super and we thoroughly enjoyed it and learned a lot about Oxford's colleges history.
Best thing to do. Gave us a better knowledge of the history and architecture and set us up for what we wNted to explore in detail. However, don't get your tickets from yjis site. They were more expensive than buying them on the bus and they have not responded to an email we sent 6 days ago
The tour was very interesting, the talk was informative, and covered everything that we wanted to learn and more. hopping on and off was very easy.
As always, the City Tour did not disappoint. Most enjoyable!
This tour was amazing!
very informative - guides obviously had tremendous local knowledge
Worth doing. Gets all the interesting stops organised as was close to our accomodation. Only complaint the stop were a bit hard to find.
Very friendly and very informative
We have been on several of these city tours in cities across the world and this one is by far the best. There are 2 colours of bus, try to catch the green one, it will have a live guide rather than the recorded commentary which is on the red bus. (this is also very good)
Hello,I just loved this trip ! Commentary was excellent!
Julie BWe had a wonderful time went on twice with two different guides and learnt so much more, well worth the money.
Keree CVery interesting.
Very worth while tour. Helpful and friendly driver.
Great to be able to go around three times. Two of the tours with a different live guide and one with the pre-recorded commentary. Each trip provided different snippets of information and we'll worth it.
Great way of seeing the city and getting your bearings. Very useful to be able to come back to places you want to spend more time seeing. Commentary interesting and helpful.
Jennifer MGreat way to get around and to give you your bearings - just a shame about the weather!
Frances WThe bus service was fine...once I was allowed to use it. The first bus driver I encountered told me I had to go to the train station where the office was and see if they would honor my papers. The second driver I encountered was clearly reluctant to accept the documents. I will thank him for finally allowing me onto the bus. Viator needs to train all the drivers regarding internet purchases and the documents generated by such sales.
Evette LMuch information about many sites. Some guides more interesting than others. We had rain so didn't get off much.
Wendy R H
This is a great way to see the city although the bus doesn't stop at all stops unless requested, unlike in other cities like Dublin, where the commentary is live, not recorded, and the driver alerts passengers to what to see at each stop.
Did not learn anything historical during the tour
David HThis hop on hop off tour was not as enjoyable as the others we did in London, Stratford, etc. We found it very difficult to understand the guide on board, and the road works in Oxford made it difficult to get around. It was quicker to get off and walk.
