What is a SIM card?

A SIM card is a small plastic card about the size of a thumbnail that’s used by GSM phones to connect to a phone carrier’s network. The SIM card stores information that identifies the phone to the service provider, allowing the phone to connect to the network and make calls. In many phones SIM cards are changeable.

How can I know if my existing phone works in the country I’m traveling to?
Whether your US or Canadian phone will work in Europe depends on your device and your carrier. While European carriers only have GSM networks, some US, Canadian and Mexican carriers use an alternate technology called CDMA. In the US, Sprint and Verizon use CDMA and most of their devices are not compatible with GSM technology. Even so, it is possible that your device can support GSM. An example is iPhone devices offered by Verizon or Sprint in the US, which also offer other “international ready” phones.

To work in Europe, your device must support the GSM 900/1800MHz frequency band. To check if your phone is GSM compatible, refer to the instruction manual it came with or call your network operator. If your current device isn’t compatible with the ekit stand-alone SIM cards, check out our phone + SIM packages. They offer a European-compatible phone and pre-paid SIM card at an affordable price.

Will a different SIM card work in my existing phone?
Yes. If your existing phone is GSM compatible and not "locked" to your network provider. Many network operators sell "locked" phones, which means that their devices are restricted to working only on their own or affiliate networks. If your existing phone is locked, you can’t use a SIM card from another network provider without unlocking your phone first.

How can I know if my device is locked?
Insert another network’s SIM card into your phone and switch it on. If you’re able to view the menu, your phone is unlocked. If your phone doesn’t show the menu but displays an error message such as "Phone restricted", "SIM not valid", or "SIM card not accepted, insert correct SIM card", your phone is most likely locked to your network provider. If you’re not sure, you can contact your provider and ask them.

How do I unlock my existing phone?
In most cases it is a simple process. Call your carrier’s customer service line and ask them about unlocking your device for use abroad with a 3rd party SIM card.
